Sophie Ward

I'm starting to like Sophie more and more. I noticed that she has a lot of the same poses as Gemma, but in a more lanky way. I hope she gets more recognition, cause she really deserves to be known as something either than "Gemma Ward's sister".

^I agree I hate how in every almost article, they say gemma's wards big sister:rolleyes:

Ditching Fashion Week all the rage for designers

Georgina Safe, Fashion editor
April 13, 2006
STEEP prices and a scarcity of slots are prompting designers to desert Australian Fashion Week.
"I try every year to go back to Australian Fashion Week but the costs are ridiculous," said designer Michelle Cook.

"I just don't think it's worth it, because unless you have incredible PR behind you it's difficult to be noticed."

Cook showed her Billion Dollar Babes label at Sydney's Dolphin Hotel yesterday.

She is one of many designers staging their collections before AFW starts in Sydney on April 26.

Michael Azzolini will show on Tuesday, followed by Nicola Finetti and Alex Perry on Wednesday.

Mad Cortes and Ginger & Smart will show next Thursday and Ben Smith will present his collection on April 24.

Perry and Finetti pulled their signature labels out of fashion week when they failed to secure the spots they wanted, although Finetti will show his diffusion line at AFW.

Premium spots are in scarce supply this year as AFW is running from Wednesday to Sunday, rather than the usual Monday to Friday. Designers are reluctant to show on the weekend, as many international buyers will have departed by then.

The Perry and Azzolini shows are being staged by Tony Assness, the flamboyant event producer behind a rival series of shows called Wharf 3, which ruffled AFW feathers three years ago.

"The people I'm working with got a very raw deal with AFW this year, so I'm working with them on something else," Assness said.

"It also costs a lot of money to be on schedule, and a lot of Australian designers don't have $5000 that they can spend."

Prices for individual shows are much more than that, ranging from $12,000 for the smallest AFW venue to $25,000 for the largest.

Others absent this year include Easton Pearson, Morrissey, Michelle Jank and Kit Podgornik, who showed her Willow label in New York this year.

Sass & Bide and Collette Dinnigan are still negotiating with AFW over whether to take part.

It's not all bad news for AFW. Tallulah Morton and Sophie Ward were among the top models at a casting for the event in Sydney yesterday.

Akira Isogawa will open AFW with Lisa Ho, Marnie Skillings and Jayson Brunsdon.

Funding from federal export agency Austrade will help bring out about 60 buyers from 20 countries, with a further 200 buyers, agents and media also expected to attend.

 for Sophie

and baaaddd for Fashion week:cry:

Gale-force glamour as Derby Day deals ladies a cool blow
By Angela Cuming
April 16, 2006
RACING princesses would have been grateful for that visit to the beauty parlour, with a well-manicured hand to keep control of lightweight hats the best accessory at yesterday's windswept Derby Day.

But despite the autumn conditions, the well-bred fillies of Royal Randwick took more plunges with their necklines than bets on the third, with strappy dresses and spiky heels the most popular punts in the fashion stakes.

The winds were a girl's worst nightmare, with carefully perched hats and fascinators in constant danger of being carried through the air and onto the home straight.

While the fashions on the field caught many an eye, it was a horse called Headturner that stole the spotlight. Wearing the fashionable colours of black and white, jockey Darren Beadman stormed home to take out the $2 million David Jones Australian AJC Derby.

By late afternoon, the sun had set on the members' stand and the temperature dropped, and the ladies of the track were left wishing they had brought a cardigan to warm themselves against Sydney's April chill.

Racegoers had earlier helped themselves to Easter eggs and flowers that were given out by protesting truck drivers sacked by Tooheys.

The 20 drivers, whose contracts were cancelled by the brewer, demonstrated outside the course.

Inside, the most extravagant looks were saved for those with exclusive marquee passes. Trying to get a ticket into one of the corporate tents in the lead-up to Derby Day was harder than trying to pick a trifecta.

Each of the marquees - Emirates, David Jones and Leona Edmiston - vied to be crowned the place to be seen at the Autumn Racing Carnival.

"Emirates and David Jones are neck-and-neck in the fashion stakes, but I would have to say that David Jones has attracted the most sophisticated and glamorous guests," said Kirstie Clements, the editor-in-chief of Australian Vogue.

In the David Jones marquee, black and white were the colours of choice, with A-listers such as Holly Brisley, Gai and Kate Waterhouse, and Justin Hemmes sticking with the monochrome theme.

"Dressing casual is so normal now that it's wonderful to see the men and women making such a good effort," Clements said.

Designer Philip Treacy held court in the Emirates marquee, which came complete with a rose-petal-filled fountain and Moroccan furniture.

Wearing his creations were former model and author Tara Moss, model Sophie Ward and retailer Belinda Seper. They mingled with Antonia Kidman, Karin Upton Baker and a heavily pregnant Chloe Maxwell, who stood out in a bright-red dress.

The Leona Edmiston marquee attracted Sydney's young fashion types, with funky caps and berets in green, red and black proving popular.

Ray's putting on the style

WHEN Ray Costarella's couture creations hit the catwalk at Australian Fashion Week in Sydney, they won't be the only WA-made products on show.

Mr Costarella's solo parade on April 26 will be an all-WA affair – with leading local make-up artist Hendra Widjaja, award-winning hairdresser Lee Preston, jewels from Rosendorff, specially designed shoes by Perth-based accessories company Sachi and leading local models.

"It's a real showcase of WA talent," Mr Costarella said.

"I want to support the team that has always supported me, and when you've got people like Hendra and Lee, it makes sense to take them with you."

Mr Costarella, who was named WA Designer of the Year in 2005 after 21 years at the helm of his label, received widespread acclaim for one of the best collections at last year's Fashion Week.

His exquisite new collection, titled Mirror Mirror, was inspired by Edwardian and art deco pieces and will be showcased on the catwalk by 11 WA women from model agency Viviens, including Allegra Carpenter, Hannah Fell, Tiah Eckhardt, Sophie Ward and Holly Caulio.

"We've got a huge surprise planned for the opening of the show, but I can't say any more than that," he said.

Other WA labels to be shown include Preacher, Story By Tang, Joveeba, Material Boy and One Fell Swoop.

Australian Fashion Week will run from April 26 to 30.

she has a very long face doesn't she? like gemma but streched out..... personally i like gemma a lot more... but they do look a lot alike!

I can definetely see one similarity. That all too infamous pout. Both she and Gemma share it. But other than that...She will always be known as Gemma Ward's sister. She just doesnt have IT. I do agree that she carries herself in a regal light.

I feel quite sorry for her! If you look at the sort of shows shes doing compared to gemma!! And shes older than gemma so it must be quite hard for her! i'm surprised she isn't doing big name designer shows, she is very pretty.
Does anyone know of any other model sisters? would be interesting to see!!

my agent at Viviens use to work for the Perth division, and was telling me about Sophie who she knew well. Sophie's really not into the modelling thing much (so dont worry, she doesnt feel cut that she's not famous) and i'ms sure acester can tell you what a wonderful writer she is.

BTW She's got a brilliant editorial in this month's FOLLOW, i'll try to scan.

as for her skinniness: i mean look at her!

Sophie was born a lean bean ^_^

thank you!
for the skininess that's impress me because in some pictures that look beautiful but not natural!
She has a really beatiful body and i don't understand why she is not more famous

^you could if someone would be nice enough to scan her harpers bazaar ed:cry:
