Ditching Fashion Week all the rage for designers

STEEP prices and a scarcity of slots are prompting designers to desert Australian Fashion Week.
"I try every year to go back to Australian Fashion Week but the costs are ridiculous," said designer Michelle Cook.
"I just don't think it's worth it, because unless you have incredible PR behind you it's difficult to be noticed."
Cook showed her Billion Dollar Babes label at Sydney's Dolphin Hotel yesterday.
She is one of many designers staging their collections before AFW starts in Sydney on April 26.
Michael Azzolini will show on Tuesday, followed by Nicola Finetti and Alex Perry on Wednesday.
Mad Cortes and Ginger & Smart will show next Thursday and Ben Smith will present his collection on April 24.
Perry and Finetti pulled their signature labels out of fashion week when they failed to secure the spots they wanted, although Finetti will show his diffusion line at AFW.
Premium spots are in scarce supply this year as AFW is running from Wednesday to Sunday, rather than the usual Monday to Friday. Designers are reluctant to show on the weekend, as many international buyers will have departed by then.
The Perry and Azzolini shows are being staged by Tony Assness, the flamboyant event producer behind a rival series of shows called Wharf 3, which ruffled AFW feathers three years ago.
"The people I'm working with got a very raw deal with AFW this year, so I'm working with them on something else," Assness said.
"It also costs a lot of money to be on schedule, and a lot of Australian designers don't have $5000 that they can spend."
Prices for individual shows are much more than that, ranging from $12,000 for the smallest AFW venue to $25,000 for the largest.
Others absent this year include Easton Pearson, Morrissey, Michelle Jank and Kit Podgornik, who showed her Willow label in New York this year.
Sass & Bide and Collette Dinnigan are still negotiating with AFW over whether to take part.
It's not all bad news for AFW. Tallulah Morton and
Sophie Ward were among the top models at a casting for the event in Sydney yesterday.
Akira Isogawa will open AFW with Lisa Ho, Marnie Skillings and Jayson Brunsdon.
Funding from federal export agency Austrade will help bring out about 60 buyers from 20 countries, with a further 200 buyers, agents and media also expected to attend.
