Live Streaming... The S/S 2026 Fashion Shows
Much like the studio system of Old Hollywood, the modeling business relies heavily on typecasting. Everyone has a part to play: Bombshells, ingenues, and square-jawed leading men are all in the mix, but unlike the talkies, modeling tends to source its talent from specific regions. Exceptions to the rule exist—who would guess that ultimate vixen Irina Shayk hails from Russia, or that jolie laide couture fixture Daiane Conterato grew up on Brazil’s beaches?—but there’s something to be said for consistency: Brazil will always net a bikini-ready beauty; Eastern Europe remains the default destination for austere blondes; and Spain, with its abundance of smoldering, elegant men, is the place for male models.
While it simply takes a glance at swoon-worthy industry veterans like Oriol Elcacho and Jon Kortajarena to understand the visual appeal, the allure of the Spanish male model isn’t solely about chiseled abs or high cheekbones. Spain tends to yield models with a force of personality that propels their careers forward, whether they are consummate pranksters whose on-set jokes leave the whole team laughing—we’re looking at you, River Viiperi—or dashing Renaissance men like model-photographer–Inez and Vinoodh muse Andrés Velencoso, there is always more to the story than what can be revealed in a shirtless selfie (not that the world doesn’t appreciate the constant stream of eye candy!). To get a feel for Spain’s influence over the profession, look at the longevity of the careers it has launched: The average model is lucky if they stick around two or three seasons—Elcacho, Kortajarena, and Velencoso have been modeling for well over a decade, attaining supermodel status while setting the standard by which all who’ve followed are judged.
Which brings us to the next generation of Spanish stars. As the male model pendulum has shifted toward androgynous and edgy, Spain has shown it has plenty to contribute. With his pout and mass of black ringlets, Piero Méndez caused a sensation when he debuted on the runway for Prada, while Dimytri Lebedyev has brought a boyish prettiness to the catwalk for labels like Calvin Klein Collection and Fendi. Marçal Taberner’s refined cool has won him a place in Jonathan Anderson’s stable of favorites, and Diego Villarreal’s combo of dramatic features and punk haircut has caught the attention of Alexander Wang and Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing. Whether these rising stars will have the shelf life of their predecessors remains to be seen, but the seemingly endless stream of beautiful faces coming out of Barcelona, Madrid, and Bilbao proves that Spanish male models are here to stay. Here, the 12 models to watch.
Jon Kortajarena
Hometown: Bilbaokortajarenajon
A male supermodel sans irony, Kortajarena’s dashing look has been used to sell everything from vodka to bespoke suits. Cineasts will recognize Kortajarena from his cameo in longtime collaborator Tom Ford’s directorial debut, A Single Man.
Oriol Elcacho
Hometown: Barcelona
Instagram: @oriolelcacho
At the height of his modeling career, Elcacho was photographed by everyone from Steven Meisel to Karl Lagerfeld. Though he still steps in front of the camera, Elcacho’s attentions are now focused on acting and being a high-profile vintner.
Andrés Velencoso
Hometown: Tossa del Mar
Instagram: @andresvelencoso
At the top of his game for the better portion of the past 15 years, Andrés Velencoso has worked with nearly every photographer and designer. Still, his work with Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin stands out as an especially resonant collaboration between artists and muse.
River Viiperi
Hometown: Ibiza
Instagram: @riverviiperi
River Viiperi’s personality has made him a favorite among insiders and industry fans alike. Quick with a joke and ready for any scenario a photographer can dream up, Viiperi has become one of the most successful male models in recent memory.
Piero Méndez
Hometown: Gijón
Instagram: @piero_mendez
Half-Spanish and half-Croatian, Piero Méndez was blessed with a distinctive look—who can resist those curls? Selected to open Prada’s Spring ’15 menswear show, Méndez has been on a roll ever since, landing campaigns for Balenciaga and Calvin Klein.
Christian Santamaria
Hometown: Barcelona
Instagram: @chsantamaria
Unquestionably gorgeous and willing to provide the world with puppy selfies, Christian Santamaria has been a regular presence in advertising since the early aughts. A former professional runner, more often than not, Santamaria’s athleticism is put to very good use.
Diego Barrueco
Hometown: Murcia
Instagram: @diegobarrueco
Tall, toned, and tattooed, Diego Barrueco has been making the rounds in indie magazines and campaigns for labels like Diesel since appearing on the scene back in 2013. With more than half a million followers on Instagram alone, he’s also no slouch at building an impressive social media presence.
Diego Villarreal
Hometown: Murcia
Instagram: @ddiegovillarreal
An accomplished photographer, Villarreal spends as much time behind the camera as he does in front of it. When he isn’t shooting fellow models like Lucky Blue Smith and Stella Lucia, he’s taking to the runway for Alexander Wang.
Andrés Sanjuan
Hometown: Blank
Instagram: @andres.sanjuan
Male models often have impressive physiques, but Andrés Sanjuan takes it to the next level. Trained in Muay Thai and boxing, Sanjuan has logic-defying abs—and is frequently tasked with showing them off.
Marçal Taberner
Hometown: Barcelona
Instagram: @marsaltaberner
When Jonathan Anderson likes you, it bodes well for the future—and the designer has certainly taken a shine to elegant Catalan model Marçal Taberner. Tapping Taberner this season for Loewe’s menswear campaign and a spot on the catwalk for his Spring eponymous line, Anderson helped put Taberner on the map.
Xavier Serrano
Hometown: Barcelona
Instagram: @xserrano9
Baby-faced sprinter Xavier Serrano was spotted on the streets of Barcelona last year and has been working ever since. Snagging prestige runway work at both Dolce & Gabbana and Givenchy was a coup, but Serrano has followed it up with spots in the campaigns for both brands, cementing his status as a face to watch.
Dimytri Lebedyev
Hometown: Benidorm
Instagram: @dimitri.le
As one of Spring’s It boys, the Spanish-by-way-of-Ukraine Lebedyev was everywhere, bringing his pristine good looks to the runway for Versace, Fendi, Calvin Klein Collection, and many other high-profile brands.
