Summer is here..Any advice for tanning?

We all know that summer stand for sexy bronze tan…the one that screams “ you’ve definitely been to the Bahamas”!

I heard many tricks, one of my friends pours beer on herself and she gets this amazing redish/orange bronizish tan…another friend pours pepsi…I personally like to use Hawaian Tropican or Baby Johnson oil…But I sometimes get darker rather than the perfect tan, and not all my body is equal tanned…For example my face will tan lighter than my neck and hands….my legs would tan darker…Any recommendations?

And regarding after sun creams to prolong the tan any recommendations to that as well?

... Im sorry I dont tan.
With so many bronzers and spray on, self-tan, Mystic Tan, stuff out there- why go under the sun and expose yourself to harsh rays....

i wonder if all the chemicals being absorbed into your blood stream with the self-tanners aren't almost as harmful...
but i am guilty of both..
i have used both self-tanners and been out in the sun...
coming from australia, i'm extremely aware of the sun...
but crave it just the same...

the locals in fiji taught me to use pure coconut oil...
no additives or harmful chemicals...
though if your skin is not accustomed to heavy sun, it can be extreme....

other than that, i have no special 'tricks'...
best thing is to use a good quality sunscreen that suits your skin type and pure aloe vera gel...
and do everything in moderation..

;)

Thanks for the tips…I prefer natural sun exposure over self-tanners…the reason being that our bodies need the sun rays…People who are facing depression are always advised to sun exposure….B)

Dulcisima, be very careful with the sun. It´s not something to be taken lightly the whole subject of sun exposure.

I love to tan, but i would never use oil for that purpose. Oil attracts the sun rays and burns you literally. Although you may not get burned if you are already a bit tanned, it´s very harmful to your skin.
And skin cancer happens you know, not to mention that ages the skin, and better safe than sorry, you don´t want to be 35 and look 50, do you?

You are right that the sun is essencial, but having a very deep tan is not. So if you want to do it safely, allways use the right protection for your skin type and then gradually lower the amount of protection. But never use less than a 5 and i am talking about body protection.
I would never use anything less than 15 for the face.

As for lotion to prolong the tan, you have several at the market, they usually have a tiny bit of self tanner in them like Johnson Holiday skin and Ambre Solaire. But a lot of moisturization is a must.

a little bit of sun is essential for Vit D, but unless youve been living in a cave or underground, or alaska with 6 months of darkness, NO ONE needs to tan.

And only people with seasonal depression are advised to get some sun.
The sun's rays are very dangerous, they cross link your DNA, that is waaay more dangerous than self-tanners, which DONT get into your bloodstream, they only penetrate the superficial layer of the skin.
never use oils, as it increases the sun's reflections onto your skin. same with being in the water all day without protection, its the reflection of the rays that get concentrated and burns you.
You might like the tan look now, but it 10 years it'll be harshly prematuring your skin and giving you wrinkles.
Tanning booths are not any better.

They have great new bottle tans now, some are gradual, and some are deep.

I agree, my days in the sun are behind me...Ive got so many freckles on my chest I feel like Mrs. Garrett..:yuk:

I just dont like self-tanners...they seem soo unreal..even if u were a pro, plus you have to keep retouching...Dunno...i prefer the natural sun...it also makes me happy...When i am tanned i feel very different....

I use self tanners and they don't look fake to me.

I'm very fair so it's pointless for me to sunbathe. Mum had a mole removed so it'd be foolish for me to do so. I go a pale yellow at the very most which is much lighter than a self tan

The colour you acquire will be your colour only - pouring beer on yourself will not make you go the same colour as your friend!

You shouldn't wear anything under a factor 15. Infact in Australia, where there is a hole in the ozone layer (and the sun is frighteningly strong), I noticed you cannot buy suncream with a factor below 15.
My housemate is Australian and she stays out of the sun too. She is pretty shocked by the way us Brits behave in the sun - over in Aus they are educated to beware of the sun.

Thankfully I don't have to tan, but I have tried (in the winter) the spray on, and it was just redundant. I still wear spf, because regardless of how much melanin one has the sun is still a no no without it.

Lady-Muck, well you see I think I am blessed with olive skin...I dont have fair skin so i dont get burnt and my skin doesnt peal at all...So i can pour what ever on myself and I would get darker... :) Even beer :)
I just want to exchange tips and see whats up in the other part of the world with tanning :)

I do self tanning in the winter. It looks great but there is just nothing like getting out of the shower late before you are heading out and getting ecstatic over your increased tan. Also: There is nothing like a day on the beach. So I would never do only self tanners, special not during summer. But that's just me.;)

Anyway; It's not really a tricks, but what I do to get more of a tan is to take the boat out to one of the small islands, put on a lot of suncream and lay on top of the small island (we are talking SMALL island. The islands here are kind of rocky so no trees and such.). Then you get the sun straight down on you and the reflection from the water.

Now I'm alittle bit brazilian so I get a golden tan anyway but my friend squeezes an orange hehe. It looks like it's working on her skin. :p

If you don't want wrinkles when you get older you should still wear a sunscreen. Doesn't matter how dark you are.

At 35 (my age) it is really easy to tell who was careful in the sun and who wasn't. Look at Madonna - Italian, brunette, she never sat in the sun and now she looks great for her age. I'ts up to you.....

Not even surgery could hide that leather handbag skin.

Thanks to Botox, alot of water, Yoga, and good diet = youthful look :)

I've never heard of pouring beer or Pepsi on yourself for tanning purposes...weird. I personally slather on sunscreen and aloe vera is my best friend. My dad is dealing with some skin cancer so I'm making sure to take care of mine.

I can't believe in 2005 people are still talking about tanning in the sun and getting maximum sun exposure! For real? Talk to your dermatologist first. Botox and yoga and lasers and microdermabrasion etc. can't fully make up for sun damage, and they're expensive. Why not just take care of your skin now, so it'll still look great when you're 40? (BTW, you don't need more than a few minutes of sun exposure to generate enough vitamin D.)

I don’t plan in getting married when I am 40 : P besides I believe in natural aging , why should we try to turn the clocks hands? Honestly I don’t believe in plastic surgery nor botox ( its pure poison injected into your skin)…some people are blessed with youthful genes others keep fighting off the aging marks : ) You are right about over-exposure , I am talking about once a week at the beach with friends…I am not talking about sun beds nor 24/7 beach trips…I am just asking whether you tried a cream , lotion or oil that truly works…I am not asking about anti-ageing cream yet : ) Will do that in another thread : )

as far as aging it is going to happen to everyone regardless, the sun is not to be seen as some horrible thing, we get our best of vitamin d from the sun. but you must protect your skin no matter who you are or what genes you have. i dont think once a week is bad, but even when sitting out in the sun you need spf. if you ever have the time go to a dermatologist and do that foto thing where it shows-up sun spots even on daker skin. it was really interesting to me. although i did not have much damage which i attribute to spf from childhood, but it was facinating to see the things we can see done to our skin from not protecting it.

i dont want to sound preachy to you but just say if anything wear your sunscreen. :flower:
