Stars Sans Stylists: What Does it Really Mean?

Does Chloé Sevigny have a stylist?

She uses Ezra Woods for big events like the Oscars, Globes etc. He has worked with Bryce Dallas Howard and Michelle Williams.

Speaking of Michelle Williams she doesn't have just one stylist she seems to use a different one each year/each event. This year so far Leith Clark put her in that awful Valentino at the Globes, Elizabeth Stewart put her in Chanel for the Oscars and Orlee Winer put her in Miu Miu for the MET Gala. I don't know whether this is a smart move or she just really doesn't care and her agent just calls someone from an agency.

And in the June issue of InStyle UK Thandie Newton said she doesn't have a stylist. Have to say I believe her more than Blake sorry.

I believe Blake. I think a stylist would keep her a little more 'polished', but Lively rocks a very 'it looked pretty' style, if that makes sense!

I don't believe Blake at all.

But the worst thing is her need to tell everyone she doesn't have a stylist. Whether she has one or not, it's aggressively annoying that this "Factoid" is brought up in every interview. Just saw her on Jay Leno, he had to bring up the same thing and she talked about it. What does the Jay Leno audience care whether she has a stylist or not? Give me a break. Her PR team seems to be aggressively trying to market her as a self-styled fashionista. It will not make me admire her anymore.

My fashion idols are Kate Moss/Ashley Olsen. If there is someone behind the scenes I won't really care. I already worship their "style".

i think it may be a money-thing. if she can prove she has "style" on her own and can prove that she can sell garments/brands simply by wearing them to events that may lead to commercial endorsements.

Whether she uses a stylist or not I'm not sure how it makes a difference money-wise. If she uses a stylist and wears a lot of Chanel for example, it will sell a lot of Chanel. If she doesn't use a stylist and wears a lot of Chanel, I think it would sell a similar amount. What would be the difference. I doubt it would be significant at all.

^Oh yeah. Helena Bonham Carter totally doesn't have a stylist. She goes in the "don't care and wear whatever they want" category.

Which is why I LOVE  Helena! Thank god there are still some mavericks out there.

Given that she is doing the MJ ad campaign, I wonder if that will affect her future choices? She looks amazing in the ads. ^_^

.. and Tilda Swinton ... do you think she has one?

I've been wondering that for a while. I don't know much about her personal life, but she doesn't seem to be an extremely busy celebrity (when compared to say someone like Beyonce) so I can see her taking the time to pick out items herself. She seems to get things that are very "her" but again it can be due to a stylist and she just has him/her very well hidden (and if she does then kudos to her, that's how a stylist should work IMO)

If I have to vote, I'll say no she doesn't have a stylist.

As far as Blake styling herself... when you have connections, have picked up a thing or two from those connections, then you see a single item you want to wear and you know that it will look good on you (how hard can that be with someone like her?) then it's easy to say she has styled herself (and for the most part she has)

Plus how hard really is it to style oneself in a single dress that was designed to make one look good as opposed to everyday clothing where more thought has to be put into it since there are many pieces that need to work together.

i personally think that one of the great examples of how much your personal fashion taste can be improved with help is Leighton. it always amazes me how much she, though the help of her stylist, changed her look (which can be seen though outfits that are obv made by herself - i'm talking mostly about candid pic outfits).

Diane is really one of the rare ones with such a specific taste gathered thoughout the years in the model world it's absolutely amazing.

On the other hand, i think that a good example of how the whole styling thing can eat you up is Kate Bosworth. i mostly love her fashionwise, but recently it's been kinda downhill with the whole IM overload, but i think she's a product of a good stylist for years now and i can't make up my mind on deciding how much input she has in it.

Tilda and Cate are IMO one of the rare ones who actually excelled in making styling totally their own in a sense of totally believing in them actually bringing 100% of their personality and easiness in the clothes they like to pick.

overall, i think stylist plays a huge part when it comes to image department in whole for celebs today and while i put a deceiving attribute to it when it comes to celebs and their fashion taste (in a sense you get a "project" vibe from it which makes it unnatural) i do think that their impact is strong and important when it comes to "pushing the limits" in today's fashion and celeb world in general.

^i completely agree with you about that bosworth girl. she looks like a total victim. the very antithesis of styling not working at all.

i also believe there is a lot of naivete that comes into play here as well. when i see the lively's or the bosworth's i think they sort of hand-to-mouth follow every iota of advice their stylists say unlike say a tilda swinton or cate blanchett who may in fact merely collaborate with an expert. meaning they have much more input and decision making.

The truth is that no one really care if you have a stylist or not. We only care if they look great or not. And I truly do not mind people who don't tell if they are using stylists or not, but I can't take celebs who are blatantly lying about it. Because then it looks like you are trying to claim credit for something someone else did.

So THAT'S how she manages without a stylist! Kate 'using personal shopper to help with wardrobe for U.S. and Canada tour'

The Duchess of Cambridge is said to employ the services of style advisers at London department stores Selfridges and Harvey Nichols, which stock many of her favourite labels...

She doesn't have a stylist, and will not be bringing a dresser on her upcoming tour of the U.S. and Canada. But it seems the Duchess of Cambridge is not without some assistance when it comes to making sartorial decisions.
According to new reports, Catherine has been consulting personal shoppers at her favourite London department stores, who help put her looks together.
Grazia Daily revealed today that the 29-year-old has been using style advisers at Selfridges and Harvey Nichols to help choose a wardrobe for her first trip abroad as a Royal wife.

Style advice: The Duchess of Cambridge is believed to have been using personal shoppers at Harvey Nichols and Selfridges to help her put together a wardrobe for her upcoming U.S. and Canada tour

It claims that Catherine has been consulting the same person used by her husband, Prince William, and his brother, Prince Harry, to do their Christmas shopping.
But her decision to buy her clothes at high-end retailers indicates that she may be stepping away from here favourite High Street labels, such as Reiss, Whistles and LK Bennett, in favour of designer pieces.

While in-store style advisers can offer sound advice when it comes to style and fit, they are not a substitute for a bona fide stylist.
Grazia explained: 'Where a personal shopper will help you to pick out outfits under your direction, a stylist will be more creative and will direct your style.

Retail therapy: Selfridges, on London's Oxford Street, stocks many of Catherine's favourite labels - but appointments with its personal shoppers are highly coveted and can book up weeks in advance

'[This] is interesting in terms of Kate because it’s another mark of how confident she is in being able to style herself - confidence which is very well-founded, if her recent sartorial choices are anything to go by.'
The stores' personal shopping services are free to customers, but appointments are highly coveted and slots can book up weeks in advance.
Catherine has certainly stepped up her style game since her wedding, and her sartorial choices, have been universally well-received. (dailymail.co.uk)

^Looks like another "celebrity" who likes to claim she doesn't use a stylist to me :innocent:

You can still get high street labels at Selfridges. LK Bennett is in the shoe section. Lame Daily Fail lame.

I don't think you can compare. Kate isn't really a celeb she's now a royal. It's different. I don't think there is anything wrong with her using a personal shopper. She won't be able to do these things when she's Queen Consort so she might as well enjoy it now.

I want to bump this thread and say that one celebrity that I don't think uses a stylist (and she was quoted in this thread for saying that) is Thandie Newton. You pretty much always see her in British brands. Giles, Jonathan Saunders, Stella McCartney etc... She is great friends with these people. She's friends with Marc Jacobs and Francisco Costa. Pour in the Louis Vuitton and Newton has proven herself to be very stylish in candids, do you really think she needs a stylist? She also knows Karl Lagerfeld. Maybe she had a stylist when she promoted Crash with the Christian Lacroix Couture gown at the BAFTAs and whatnot.

And if I'm being honest, I really don't doubt that Blake Lively doesn't use a stylist. There's nothing really substantial about her style. A Chanel/Valentino/Gucci dress and Louboutins isn't exactly the work of a great stylist!

^ I would have to agree with about Thandie. She is flawless when it comes to dressing. She's never looked sloppy.

Lots of people still get upset over the Blake no stylist debate. Sorry I can't believe that she doesn't have one but there's nothing wrong with having one.

A couple of days ago, my friend and I were discussing celebrity styles, which looks we loved and which ones we didn't. Then she said something very interesting that I shouldn't be crediting the celebrity for how amazing she looks but her stylist because most of them do but then she said Chloe Sevigny and Maggie Gyllenhaal didn't.

So I started this thread so we can discuss which celebrities dont have stylists have a better idea of which celebrities we admire their style and fashion sense :flower:
