Steven and William Ladd's bags are as precious--and pricey--as gems

What takes 300 hours to make, comes with a price tag in the thousands, and has Paris ateliers buzzing? A one-of-a-kind bag by brothers Steven and William Ladd. In a season of statement-making accessories, their creations are the ultimate eccentricity. (When Christian Lacroix saw one, he asked the pair to contribute to his couture show.)
The Eighth Arrondissement is a long way from St. Louis, where Steven sewed his own clothes and William beaded bracelets for pals, but they've prepped for this since moving six years ago to Brooklyn, where they live sans beds or a TV. "We removed distractions to focus on our creative process," says Steven. To buy one of their bags, you may have to shed extravagances too, but it will be worth it.
