i was recently reading a self help book on how american women can make themselves feel better by aping french women style-wise etc.

the book mentioned how mens' swimming trunks are banned in many places in france for "hygiene" purposes - but didnt really go into much detail.

A male french friend explained to me that they were banned due to the fact that french men could possibly wear them all day and then go swimming - fouling the pools.

are mens swimming trunks banned in other countries? or is this just a french concern?? this story mentions that they are banned in parts of belgium also.

Why Speedos are still huge in France

Angelique Chrisafis/ guardian.co.uk

Alton Towers in Britain has banned Speedos. In France, meanwhile, they're still virtually compulsory ...

So Alton Towers has banned embarrassingly titchy swimming trunks at its water park. But spare a thought for France, where the opposite is true: local authorities regularly force men to ditch their Bermudas and parade in skin-tight budgie-smugglers for the greater public good.
In French public pools, from the racing lanes of Paris to the open-air lidos and water parks of the south, anything bigger than Speedos is banned and you must hoist yourself into a posing pouch as a civic requirement. French changing rooms are littered with the broken dreams of prudish males abroad who thought they could sneak in a few lengths without showing their contours.
One Paris-based Irish journalist recalls how he attempted some early-morning back-stroke in a pair of standard Marks & Spencer navy swim shorts that came "about halfway down my thighs". As he lowered himself into the shallow end, the pool attendant screamed that his oversized attire was outlawed. "I said they were being ridiculous and glided into the middle of the pool. A lifeguard jumped into the water after me, three other attendants fetched a big hook for fishing out drowning people and hauled me in. I had to come back in an unbelievably skimpy pair that were somehow acceptable, but bloody uncomfortable for me and anyone who had to look at them."
Why the enforced parading of Frenchmen's bulges? "Hygiene," says Emmanuel Dormois, a head pool attendant in Paris's 11th arrondissement. "Small, tight trunks can only be used for swimming. Bermudas or bigger swimming shorts can be worn elsewhere all day, so could bring in sand, dust or other matter, disturbing the water quality. By banning them outright, we're not forced to stand there measuring what can be defined as swimming shorts. I accept that some men feel very ill at ease wearing small trunks, but others don't mind."
Similar reports of enforced Speedos come from traumatised English visitors to a Belgian water park where bigger swimming shorts were also banned.
Yet on the comparative freedom of French beaches men's crack-splitting tangas and tight nylon slips have gone out of fashion. The smallest tasteful covering is what French stylists call the "boxer" trunk, tight, Daniel Craig-style mini-shorts that look less like ladies' knickers. Not that public pool rules are never challenged. A feminist group has staged topless protests for the right of women to wear only bikini bottoms in line with men. Others argue that if bald men have to wear swimming hats how come others don't have to shave off their beards? And so the debate continues.

meh

i'm more concerned about guys these days wearing swim trunks with underwear underneath.

ugh frenchie marble bags are gross unless you're on the olympic team

baggies/trunks are THE way to go for men, just take a shower before the pool already.

it was a bit interesting how in the story i posted that conversely, a resort in the UK was banning speedos because they werent "family friendly".

i always get creeped out when i see men wearing them, which thankfully is very very rare in my country.

i think most people around here would think that men wearing speedos or speedo styles are potentially perverts or strange exhibitionists.

here in the US most pools require (or have signage at least) that says showering before pool use is required. maybe this isnt a requirement in france.

Well, I wish speedos were banned forever *edit - no weight talk*
Aren't there swimming trunks with extra lining inside? Like a speedo in disguise?

I'm a guy, and I would NEVER wear speedos! I wear trunks or Bermudas, that fall just above the knee or a bit higher, I would rather die before anyone sees me in speedos! means no pool for me when I go to France =D

The article is quite amusing :D I've never heared of such things before. In Eastern Europe, where I am from, there are not any restrictions on men's underwear, and I must say, the greater part of our males prefer tight little speedos more than boxers or bermudas and seemingly nobody feels embarrassed by this detail. Nevertheless, I think that french (as well as puritanical british)pool rules are some discriminating and rather futile in the struggle for hygiene against human factors. To keep the indoor swimming pools clean it would be easier to enforce everybody to take shower before swimmimg and if the pool is the open air circulating one it's sufficient to provide it with a good flowage.

You can wear tight boxers and speedo-types but nothing else. We have to take a shower before going into the pool. There are showers in our pools.

I'm so disappointed by the comments to the effect that men should be forbidden from wearing speedos because it looks gross or the men wearing them don't embody the perfection of a male form. Imagine if someone said that only VS models are allowed to wear a bikini because everyone else looks gross in it? Well nobody would say because it's wrong and because of the backlash to such comments, so why is it ok to make similar remarks about men? True, most men wouldn't look good in a speedo, but most men probably don't look that good in shorts either. Should we just forbid them from swimming in public?

But I had no idea swimming shorts were actually banned in France. Seems a bit extreme. Mostly all men in the US wear swimming shorts and I don't think there's a widespread hygiene problem with that practice.

I think this is good if it helps with hygiene problems in pools. I see the argument. But I also feel bad for the men in regards to having to display more of their body by law than they might be comfortable with. LIke what if for females the law was no one-piece swimsuits, you must wear a bikini. I know that has nothing to do with hygiene, but just in regards to displaying more of your body than you may be comfortable with. That would suck if you were really self-conscious. So I feel bad for the men in that respect.

Also um... do pools now have to keep a stock of different sizes of speedos freshly laundered for men to borrow if they didn't bring the right swimming attire? LIke if they didn't know the law or are visiting France? Or are you just forbidden from entering the pool?

eta: What about toddlers who wear those diaper things with plastic diapers over them? I am more concerned about those and the bacteria they could bring into pools. Are toddlers banned from pools too?

Completely agree.-_-
Regardless if its appealing or not, just let them wear what they feel most comfortable in. Heck, I rather wear a speedo than wear those bermuda type swimming shorts. I just cringe whenever I see guys wear shorts a bit below their knees at the beach. Eeek. That's majority of the guys here in the United States.

I only wear speedos, in public pools and sometimes on the beach (better for a beautiful tan) !!!! And that's because I used to be a swimmer ... And therefore, was used to wear those from 8yrs old til 16yrs old ...
And indeed, the trunks are forbidden in public pools. Who can seriously swim in lanes with trunks ???? Those are not professional swimmers ... but we can use swimming trunks (like the ones you see on swimmers during the Olympic). The trunks that are banned are the trunk shorts, surfers or random wear on beach during the summer (the Villebrequin kind of thing).

I don't see the issue ...
And regarding the US public pools, I avoid them in Manhattan ... Because to me, there's too much choler (so it hurts my skin and hairs) and the lockers look disgusting, and they don't seem secure ... In France, we have more than anything public pools (on the contrary of here) ... And it's easier to find a clean public pool in Paris, or province towns than in NYC (where I have to go to Flushing Meadows to really swim in proper lanes without taking a membership!) ... But probably, because when we go to the public pools it's to swim in lanes and not just to fresh up (especially in south of France, where everyone has a private pool in their garden, or knows somebody who has one).

I would love to know what are water parks in south of France ??? I never heard of banning trunk in what I think they are (ie, some lakes or stuff like that right ?). And indeed they are banned, because most of the times you would wear the trunks all day long and that is not very clean (an habit I have observed in NY ... So talk about hygiene ... And don't bring me on that subject in this city...)

That's so fun to read some comments ... Ignorance and culture clash even btw western countries ... Ahahahah
