Caring for shoes???

I have just bought these shoes from NAP.com and they are so cute (perfect for an otherwise Rick Owens outfit).

Question is,is there a way to protect them from moisture and dirt, and how? Can they be cleaned?

They are so pretty,I had to have them, but I don't think they're the most practical thing...

Thanks for any advice:smile:

Ok According to NAP I have to Scotchguard them before wearing them. I have heard of this, but what is it?Where can I get it?

It's just a spray-on waterproofer/protectant. You don't necessarily have to use Scotchgard, you can get a similar product at any shoe repair shop.

But, to give you a better idea of what it is: http://www.3m.com/us/home_leisure/scotchgard/

Your shoes are very pretty, btw. :flower:

I thought scotchguard was a spray you used when ironing shirts... or something.

i definitely suggest you scotchguard these shoes, as well... satin shoes are the WORST!!

:D Oh well.

I still go with my original advice whens someone else asked about satin shoes.

Wear baggies tied around your ankles. Satin shoes are a b*tch.

Thanks for the advice everyone:smile: I have scoured half of Rotterdam unsuccessfully in search of Scotchguard or something which promises to protect satin...a clever person suggested a bridal shop,so I'll do that tomorrow...

Oh I shall also be in Antwerp tomorrow so maybe it'll be easier to get then.

Yup,these are strictly travel-by-car,indoor shoes

I've seen scotchguard for sale in hardware stores as well..Perhaps they could be worth trying.

VERY nice shoes btw:D

I searched for a thread like this and I didn't find it, but I think it's important. Once we've got that awesome pair of shoes or leather bag, we don't want them to fall apart on us, especially since it may not be available to buy again later. I hope we can share our leather/suede care tips here.

What I use on my (matte) leather boots is Kiwi shoe polish. It adds the color back in, hides the scuffs and I've heard it actually nourishes the leather. I am very satisfied with the results, but I don't think this waterproofs them. I think you would need something extra for that. Also, in the winter, I wipe my shoes with a wet and then a dry cloth to prevent salt damage.

Here are my questions regarding this topic today,

- What do you use to waterproof your leather or suede? What would you NOT recommend?

- How do you take care of your PATENT leather items?

- How do you take care of your SUEDE items?

- Have you ever tried using colored shoe polish to restore color on a faded leather belt? Do you suggest this?

- What are your leather/suede care tips, your DOs and DON'Ts?

I use apple leather products on my shoes and bags and it really seems to keep the moisture in the leather and keep it from fading. They have a special one for suede but I haven't used this yet. I dont treat patent becuase I really dont think it would get through the patent coating. I'd avoid anything with silicone in it becuase it "clogs the pores" and doesn't allow the leather to breathe.

A big dont I know is not to store shoes in plastic boxes becuase they can't "breathe" and the leather may dry out. I've also heard to store them in their cardboard boxes as apposed to out in the open to avoid dust, but I dont have the room for bozes and my shoes seem fine. I just wipe the dust off and no harm done

For suede, I spray protector on the shoes almost everytime I wear them, to keep the color strong and the suede in good condition.

For leather, I polish, and then spray protector. Especially on my boots, cause I want them to last forever.

Patent leather shoes wear out really easily. There's not really much you can do.

For the belt, I would try it. I use colored polish for all my leather shoes, so I don't see why it wouldn't work for a leather belt.

Nothing will make leather or suede waterproof.

Hope I could help.

coffee, what kind of spray protector do you use? Have you had problems with flaking or drying out?

I use mink oil on my leather boots. Just rub it in, let it dry, then wipe it off with a soft cloth. It conditions the leather, and keeps them dry. I will also mink oil my leather pumps if I will be wearing them in sloppy weather.

I actually don't know the name of the spray. It's at my store. It comes in a black can, with pictures of shoes and boots on it, though.

Stuff the toes of your shoe so the toe boxes don't get deformed. I store my good good shoes in their original boxes.... the other's I have hanging in two shoe organizers hanging off my wall and the back of my door.
