^really... :o Ameera, may I ask where do you live? :o I have only heard of them in England, but a few weeks ago I did meet someone in East U.S. (maybe new york) and he said there are several companies that do tailoring for men... suits, etc. I am just really curious about durability when it comes to handsewing. I won't have my sewing machine for a while because I have to leave it in storage... but I want to make some clothes and I don't mind handsewing.

I live in Bahrain.. Middle East. Pretty Far :(! but really, they're all over. i own a tailor shop and last year i had two tailors from India, one of them used to make suit jackets handsewing. i never used his skills though becuase i make clothes for women. Are you a tailor? i'd love to learn!!

go to youtube and type " Signe Chanel"

I remember watching that earlier this year [or was it last year?!] on BBC4. Its very insightful and the women were so very inspiring. I would give anything to have a talent and dedication [and patience!] like theirs. It really does give you a renewed appreciation for all the hard work the people behind the scenes put in.

Anyone remotely interested in fashion must watch this.

tailoring

:woot: Thanks Educo! I just got that book today. I guess when they say tailoring, it doesn't only mean 'custom fit'--the idea of tailoring is based on creating shape with all the layers of fabric and padding. That is what I'm reading. I did not know that. -_- But you know, I don't want to look padded and wear suit jackets... I just want to wear something light.

I'm not a tailor, Ameera, but i got a book on tailoring now...:shifty:

i just finished watching Signe Chanel, and all i have to say is that i admire all the fine ladies that make the dresses, it is truly an amazing process a def. must watch, i had no idea of some facts on Haute Couture

The Best Hands in the World
One of the pleasures and privileges of covering the haute couture collections is visiting the ateliers of the houses. If the heavy lifting is done in the unconscious—Lagerfeld always says his ideas come to him in dreams—then couture’s lightness is finessed in the workrooms. Couture models are made in pieces, to accommodate the flow of deliveries from embroiderers and other specialists, and then everything is assembled. At Dior, the workers were awash in the bright tulle and silk that would become John Galliano’s show for the 60th anniversary of the house. Pride? Yes. The people in the ateliers love a visitor to (slightly) gawp at the quality of their handwork. And they like a good joke. Tucked into a frame of Coco Chanel’s picture in Madame Jacqueline’s atelier was a snap of Lagerfeld. Who rules in Paris? The hands.

I guess they don't make the fabric themselves for couture, right? Or do effects to it themselves?
I saw Lacroix on tv and he mentioned ordering heavy silk custom-made from Italy

I just finished watching the whole Signe Chanel....amazing. It's just mind blowing to me how these collections just seem to all come together hours before the model walks out! I mean, I had some prior knowledge that these shows were down to the last minute, but...WOW. Watching all those people sewing until the show started! It's...mind blowing...the talent these people have! I'm so inspired right now!

And seeing those pictures Ghost posted a couple pages back of the Dior Haute Couture SS 04 pictures were.....beyond magical.

All this couture makes me want to make something amazing!
