i liked soho when i visted over the summer, but the area i hope doesn't become too commercial is greenwich village.

I've not been to New York for about four years, I can't believe that Canal Jeans has gone - it was those kind of scruffy stores that made soho.

This kind of thing happens everywhere though - I used to live in Notting Hill (London) in the early nineties and for me, its now ruined, the kooky shops have closed, it is full of samey coffee bars and is inhabited by the super rich.

But the cool people move on - Brick Lane is hip now - where is hip in NY?

I was there two days ago. The Tribeca area and Thompson street are pretty unharmed but the rest was awful; it makes me really sad that I never got to see Soho in it's prime. My generation only knows the Soho that Looks like Disney, tastes like Coke, and smells like crap.

I used to live in Notting hill in the early 90's. What happened. Jeez havent been there in a while. Is high street Ken intact?

pinkmonkey-i think what people have said here...areas that are 'hip'...tribeca, the lower east side...parts of chelsea...the west village...nolita...basically the areas surrounding soho...maybe the east village...maybe wiliamsburg for a younger crowd...depends on what you're looking for...

You can use a bathroom at Soho Grand?!?! I'd never think, thanks for the tip. I was in their bar once, but never thought you can just walk in. Cafe Cafe, yes. Also, Replay store (on the lower level) and Angelica.

it's ALMOST dead - SoHo stil has the best stores, it's the influx of the crappy ones that make it less enjoyable to hang out there...
