Judging by the amount of discussion in other threads, I thought it was about time it had one all to itself!

Dir; Baz Lurhmann

Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby
Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan
Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway
Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan
Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker
Isla Fisher as Myrtle Wilson
Jason Clarke as George B. Wilson
Brendan Maclean as Klipspringer

yeps, The Great Gatsby is a book by F. Scott Fitzgerald and it is a good book also!

I am excited by this movie.
Carey, Isla, Leo, Toby are all nice choices I think.
and I have liked the work Baz has done, Australia was ok too,
it is not so bad every one keep saying
and Moulin Rouge is one of my favourite movies ever
So I have also high expections toward this movie.

As I've expressed elsewhere before, I'm not keen on the Leo/Tobey casting-I would have loved Ryan Gosling and Joseph Gordon Levitt or Dom Cooper-but I am pleased it's Baz doing the film. I think a lot of people are worried about him doing it based on his red curtain trilogy of films, but I think if you look at Australia then you see what he's capable of in a 'real' setting (yes I know the film was flawed and over long). I love his aesthetic, his unashamed romantic streak and his use of light. I've said this elsewhere too but it's in his films that the actors tend too look the best they've ever looked on screen (Ewan/Nicole/Hugh/Leo/Claire Danes!).
The other plus of a Baz film is Catherine Martin doing the costumes, they're always superbly researched and beautifully executed.

Not so keen on Leo/Toby and like LittlePaperStars I still think Ryan Gosling and Joseph Gordon Levitt would have made better choices for Gatsby and Nick. However, it isn't ghastly casting and I'm sure it'll work out fine. And I do like Carey she's such a great actress. Also, people please don't shoot me, but I'm not a fan of Baz's films. In terms of costumes and lighting they are fantastic but otherwise I've apparently not fell under his spell. But I really hope this movie can change my opinion because The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite books. And I hope he does the book just.

I have a feeling this will be one of the biggest financial fails of all times. I can't understand how someone approved a $150Mill budget for this. Have Baz's movies together been able to gross that much? You'd think after the flop that was Australia, studios would be more reluctant to just sign off on a check for him, guess not.

I also am very skeptical about it's chances with critics. The casting is not very inspired in all honesty, although they're all pretty good actors. The source material is almost legendary so it'd be hard to live up to it at any rate, but Baz hasn't really proven himself to be capable of delivering. I know Moulin Rouge is now considered a great movie, but people always forget that when it was released Summer 2001, it got mixed reviews at best. Then somehow it was able to catch on with the awards groups and became the awards horse it was. But still, it's a love/hate (it grew on me a lot to the point where I'd consider myself a fan) movie and TGG will need to be more inclusive to be a hit.

i can't stop thinking that if it is done using pieces from Fall 2011 menswear collections... like it should.. I'll love it.

Toby/Leo = no. Don't particularly like either

Baz = uncertain. His aesthetic may be too campy for this story, which is all about wealth, elegance, even understated cool, to a degree. I don't think Baz could do understated with his hands tied behind his back, thus I am worried it will be an overblown 3D extravaganza, which will ruin the subtle messages in Fitzgerald's prose. Baz is perfect for musicals, but this? Not sure. I am willing to wait and see...

Carey as Daisy = I can see it. She will suit the 1920s look, imo.

Tobry and Leo?
As a previous member pointed out, Joseph Gordon Levitt for Nick and Ryan Gosling for Jay would've been ideal! Nonetheless, I'm seeing this since Carey is starring in it and the book remains to be one my most treasured books ever.

I feel that you should at least have a pull towards either Nick or Jay, for me, I find neither of them remotely attractive so it's all lost on me. The only pro I can see in it is that Leo and Tobey have been friends for years and some of that might work on screen. I think they're both perfectly capable actors, Leo's potentially great, but I think they're so off the mark with this. As it stands, Tom is gong to be the more interesting character. Carey and Isla I'm fine with but I would like to have seen more of a name for Jordan, I'm worried that might be a wasted role.

I think I'm having a panic attack!

AUSTRALIAN model-turned-actor Gemma Ward has bagged her first major film role since 2008's The Black Balloon, after being added to the ever-increasing cast of Baz Luhrmann's film adaptation.

Ward, quiet on the career front since the death of her former beau Heath Ledger three years ago, will have a "significant" part in The Great Gatsby, which begins shooting in Sydney next week.

Aside from a small role in Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides -- in which she played Tamara, Queen of the Mermaids -- the 24-year-old has dabbled in modelling and theatre.

"I have taken a break from the media spotlight for the past few years and it was something spurred by Heath's death," Ward said earlier this year.

Ward is expected to join the rest of The Great Gatsby A-list cast this week.

All the major roles are filled so it will be interesting to see what part she has. I can't see it being very big.

Who could she play? I can't think of any other women she could be. Although, I do like Gemma, she was great in The Black Balloon. So who knows, this could be a big step for her acting wise.

Check out what aussie model Stephanie Carta just tweeted:

Getting fitted into some prada for the great gatsby...

Exciting! Perhaps Martin and Miuccia are collaborating in some way?

Looks-wise I never had much of a mental image for Daisy. Far more important, in my opinion, is her voice. As I don't think there's anything particularly remarkable about Mulligan's I hope she works on it for the film.

^ Completely agree with you, Pavementfrippery about Daisy. I picture Daisy to sound like Cora (played by Elizabeth McGovern) from Downton Abbey, a breathy sort of voice, so hopefully Carey can master such an accent. Or at least an American accent without sounding terrible. And maybe Miuccia is suppose to be the new Ralph Lauren (he did the suits for Robert Redfords, The Great Gatsby)?

All the casting choices are somewhat unexpected, so I kind of like that about it.
At least we know they all can act.

The only thing I'm worried about is this whole 3D thing.

Unexpected? I think it's quite uninspired... Leo could be expected and Carey as well. Carey and Knightley usually get the "young beautiful, yet not in your face" 1920 woman part...
