I don't think it was a bad movie or anything and it's not surprising to me that it won best picture, given Sean Baker's career trajectory. His projects since Tangerine have been met with such effusive praise in a way "indie" directors usually don't receive from the ~mainstream media~, so it seemed like his career was building up to this. Overall the movie was just... fine? I was shocked that people found it funny? And the actor for Igor was nominated for Best Supporting Actor? Huh, what did he DO? Especially when you compare it to Kieran Culkin's performance in A Real Pain. Wild that he was nominated at all!! I used to pay attention much more to the awards season and I was looking forward to Anora and kept putting it off, I probably would have liked it a lot more if I had saw it in the theatre vs on prime. I think it was too long. At the end of it all I just felt, "okay, who cares?"
I liked Mikey's performance. I haven't seen The Substance yet, I just wasn't into film in 2024. I have a strong dislike for Demi Moore in general (probably beginning as a teen with the CONSTANT coverage of her and Ashton Kutcher, whom I despise) and the narrative about her "second" comeback and how it's about time she's ~earned~ an Oscar win/nom annoyed me so much. Like, based on what previous roles do people think she was snubbed? It's super bizarre.
