Not a movie, but I just got back from the opera. Lucia de la something... It was completely awesome, definately one of my favourites so far. And I have seen a couple too, nearly ten so far, since starting a couple of years ago. Anyway, I was expecting the typically humurous kind of one person dying after another. Halfway through the first act, I even had the whole thing plotted out.
And then, about part of the way through, it broke the mold for me. I'm not going to give it all away, although I doubt that anyone really, will see it after me, but still... Just- the most beautiful mad scene that I've ever watched. The
best insane female character ever, better than Ophelia or Lady Macbeth or any of the others. I've got all of these images now, of women in blood-stained gowns sweeping around and giggling strangely off to themselves.
Besides being totally believable in her role, the lead had the most stunning voice that I've heard in opera. She would just go from the lowest, most gentle sounds to a richness that filled absolutely everything. People always joke about opera singers having voices strong enough to break glass, but her voice was so strong in the most wonderful sense. It just filled the entire hall and your ears just reverberated with it. At the end of her major scene I just wanted to give a standing ovation right then. Thankfully, we did wait until the end though.

Oh, and I've now decided with my sister and a friend that I went with, that despite being much too old for candy, we're going to put together a bunch of themed costumes for this year's Hallowe'en. My younger sister, who's tall, strong, darker and busty is going to be a Valkrei. Since, well, we'd last seen the a segment of the Ring Cycle. She's planning out her outfit, with a black corset and a headress and some sort of pronged spear. My friend, who's also a redhead, but larger than me, is going to be the Queen of the Night from the Magic Flute. We're still figuring out that outfit, but she currently wants an enormous black horse with a chariot and a crown full of stars. And, of course, I'm going to be Lucia. Simple, mad, completely sweet Lucia.
We're very weird...
