The Most Hideous Dress You've Ever Seen...

^Those looks are literal copies of the pieces from their archives and they're iconic... that's why they're hideous in a more passable way imho.

So you think those ICONIC Versace looks belongs in this thread? OK OK OK LOL LOL LOL LOL. This forum is a joke these days.

I find those Versace pieces fabulous! Bad taste done right...Still genius!

You got a point, it's all about whether you like this type of bad taste or not, I'm more into Prada's bad taste and the like. Maybe I'm the only one, but I've never been a fan of Donatella's tacky bling bling and way of doing kitsch.

^ That's Gianni's bling bling and kitsch, actually. They're updated versions of pieces he designed.

You don't have to like it at all, that goes without saying, but please make sure you know who and what you're criticizing.

I'm more into Prada also...Maybe because i wear Prada but it's a different type of bad taste. Gianni Versace and Karl Lagerfeld are the two designers that made me fall in love with fashion so there's something special about it.

Prada's bad taste is not as fearless as Gianni. Gianni broke all the conventions and rules. From tailoring, to sexuality to prints, he really used everything he had in his power to challenge fashion.

Prada is a little bit more bourgeois. It's maybe more cerebral (i hate the word intellectual) and i don't particulary see Prada as bad taste. I see it as classic taste with a twist. Prada clothes are very conventional and practical.

I've always loved Versace but i've came to buy it really late in my life (5 years ago) because it is quite untouchable for me. You need that extra dose of confidence to wear a Versace piece...And remember i also love Tom Ford. Prada is not that untouchable.

I know they're his pieces, but like you said... updated versions, and it's not like Donatella's aesthetic is very far from that either anyway. Irregardless, I know these days most people will never say anything bad about his work, most dead designers are genius to everyone, so I'm sorry if I said a blasphemy to any of his fans... it was just a personal opinion, not trying to cause drama.

I know a few 16th century pieces that are pretty iconic, would you wear them today?

There was a place for these pieces, that's why fashion evolves. This trend of "digging" the archives is as despicable as all the Hollywood re-runs/remakes. It's an excuse for laziness and often times done terribly wrong.

This is perfect for a museum, not to go out like this.

The show was a tribute to Gianni and his work. It is far from laziness.

Some people really find fault in anything don't they?

Some people have different taste, yes, that happens. :flower:

If the person who posted this thinks it is hideous, so be it. The thread is called "The most hideous dress you've ever seen...".

I'm really not sure why people are going against this. You think he was genius? Good for you, but let people form their own opinions. His "genius" is not set in stone.

^ While you have a point that taste is subjective, I think it's fair to say that Gianni's genius actually is set in stone lol.

Much like Dior, Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, Halston, Chanel and other designers who earned their place in the pantheon of greats by literally inventing a style of dressing that was uniquely their own, you sort of have to respect its ingenuity, skill, creativity and significance of Versace's iconic designs even if you don't actually like the garment itself.

So yes, taste will always be subjective. Brilliance, though, really isn't.

Should I even bother posting the Dolce dresses from the ‘secret millennial’ show? :ninja:

Brilliance is subjective and always changes over time. Shakespeare was not always considered a genius, so, yes, contesting the brilliance of Versace is valid.
