Would a long fitted jacket count as a "fitted jacket" or does it have to be short?

Blazers For Fall
Cropped, shrunken, distressed, frayed...the blazer never goes out of style
By Kerry Pieri
After checking out several sample sales, getting dressed in the morning on these not-quite Spring days, and witnessing Gwyneth Paltrow's high-fashion marathon that was the Iron Man premiere, it occurred to me... The blazer is having a moment again.

Over the years blazers have been cropped and shrunken, distressed and frayed, and manufactured in corduroy and denim. But change is afoot, as women on the streets and models on the runway have been rocking blazers in a different way.

Blazers are being worn not just with suits, but over dresses, for day and night, with jeans and skirts, dressed up with scarves or dressed down with blouses or t-shirts.

Kate Moss wears the sport jacket perfectly, as does the aforementioned Gwyneth Paltrow, and the Olsen twins.

Come Fall their will be no denying the so-called "trend" - which sounds like a misnomer when used with such a classic piece.

Designers across the board are loving it. Chris Benz goes for the boyfriend vibe.

Band of Outsiders loves plaid and anything lean.

Phillip Lim never creates anything that won’t make you look like the coolest girl in the office, Ruffian has an updated Elizabethan agenda, and Threeasfour keeps the palette clean and sophisticated.

With bubble hems and trapeze shapes lining closets next to babydoll dresses and A-line tops the past few seasons, the time is just right for a beautifully tailored piece that’s perfect for layering.
Don't be afraid to mix the blazer with very feminine pieces, as the menswear look is only one way to style this effortlessly slick jacket.

Finding the perfect piece of outerwear for cool spring days and breezy summer nights is often a source of great frustration (for us, anyway). While it’s fine to choose a classic option, like a trench or cardigan, our favorite solution is the blazer. We’re not talking about the super-snug, Balenciaga-style, shrunken blazers from last season, but rather a longer looser shape. The new tuxedo styles (per Keira and Irina above) are one lovely possibility, but we’re also enamored with the oversized versions we’ve seen lately on Lake Bell and Ashley Olsen.
There is an unbelievable selection of blazers in stores now, but before we tick off our favorites, let’s address how the above ladies are wearing them. Recent recluse (seriously, where has she been?) Keira Knightley was spotted strolling in Paris wearing a black tuxedo blazer and a pair of MiH’s Berlin Jeans. We like how she pushed the sleeves up, just like Ashley Olsen did with her white blazer at the New York Sex and the City premiere. Miranda Kerr went for a slightly shorter shape with her semi-boxy cropped tux jacket, while Gwyneth Paltrow chose to wear a long and lean blazer while out and about in London. Paltrow is really into her blazers right now; she also wore an oversized cream Stella McCartney blazer for an Iron Man event. Our final two females, Irina Lazareanu and Lake Bell, both made spectacular style choices with their jacket selections. Lazareanu, seen here post-show during Paris Fashion Week, threw on a long pale gray jacket over a tee and suspenders, while Bell balanced the volume of her blazer with a sleek pair of graphite jeans.
One of the reasons we felt this story was particularly relevant is because blazers were not just a big spring trend (seen at Chloe, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and Ann Demeulemeester), but are huge for fall as well (seen at Calvin Klein, Paul and Joe, and Erin Fetherston). So if you feel like buying a blazer now, know that you can use it well into next season. If Ms. Olsen’s white jacket inspired you to get your own, we’d like to suggest Topshop’s Oversized Blazer ($120) or the White Linen Blazer ($585) from Wayne. The antique white Double Breasted Blazer($350) by 3.1 Phillip Lim is also amazing and it’s incredibly soft (feels like t-shirt material).![]()
We also love the long length and cuff detail of Smythe’s Contrast Blazer($570) and think Paltrow would approve of the lean lines of Helmut Lang’s Single Button Jacket
($520). On a shorter note, Twenty8Twelve’s Calandra Jacket ($418) has a cropped shape and tux-style that reminded us of Miranda Kerr’s blazer choice. Whatever you pick, at least you’ll have a seasonally appropriate solution!![]()
