TIME Magazine: The All-TIME 100 greatest fashion icons

Part is this is list is really questionable.

Where's Margiela? How does he go unmentioned? Where's Yohji Yamamoto? Charles Frederick Worth and Madame Grès?

Without Grace Jones, there would be no Gaga. She wouldn't have anyone to copy.

And where's Leigh Bowery? Gaga over Leigh?

I think people need to look at who is producing this list before they start bitching about who isn't included...

I looked immediately for a few names to see whether this list was credible ... no Paul Poiret?! I notice that it is also quite skewed toward Americans ... whatever. I didn't expect Time to be able to cover fashion.

I do not question Heidi's mention on this list. And for people to pass off quips such as "well if Heidi then Tyra might as well be on here too" - really? Tyra, of ANTM fame whose show is more a showcase of her over-the-top ego than it is an actual a launching pad for models? I don't think it needs to be explained why that show & Tyra, as well as Heidi's German version of it, are contributing very little (if anything) to the fashion industry. And that is precisely why Tyra is left off this list, and rightly so. To pair Tyra/ANTM with Heidi/PR, IMO, is a cheap shot. The two are nowhere near the same caliber of achievement and contribution to the fashion industry.

imo Heidi Klum and Tyra have pretty much the same role in the fashion industry which is bringing that world to the mainstream, but not really influencing the industry themselves: none of their winners or contestants (models or designers) have been relevant in high fashion..
if they would've done a TV section in the list then Tyra and Heidi might've deserved a place, as models they just don't.

ta-ta,you raise a very interesting point. i mean one would think, this being TIME and sort of geared toward american readers, where are the legends of american fashion? where is bonnie cashin of anybody?! i mean, can you think of another name more synonymous with american fashion than she is? also, where is geoffrey beene who revolutionized american design with his architecture? where is claire mccardell who brough european sophistication to american sportswear? and then to see mary kate and ashley olsen.

to look at such a list you have to question how much these editors seriously researched this endeavour not to mention their merits as fashion journos. and for it to come from such a leading publication that i thought had a lot of substance,it's kind of a shame, this looks so lazily,if not rather superficially, put together.

and i don't want to get into an argument about gaga but seeing where she is and how long she's been at it,icon has truly lost its meaning.

I think we need to remember that this list is probably not only about recognition, but also about how much those names paid to be there.

I think you can safely say this list is biased toward two groups: The Americans and The Living. Lots of dead people are missing from that list...and some quite undeserving living are on it....

^agreed.

i was just realizing too,the criminal absence of the one and only, diane pernet who really kind of became a beacon of blog-style fashion journalism....and besides that,is one of the leading influences on independent fashion.
