Treating / Preventing Facial and Acne Scars

St. Ives Apricot Scrub will f.u.c.k. your face up. Dont use it. It has jagged edges of apricot shards. When you're exfoliating you want round beads to refine and smooth and exfoliate, and these shards scratch the surface of your skin, thus scarring will occur if you use it longterm. Other products to avoid are definitely ProActiv as its the most dehydrating skincare I've ever seen. You can check your dehydration levels by taking your index finger on your cheek, and lifting it. Do the same with index and thumb on forehead and nose and if you see creping of the skin (looks very dry and lined) you are dehydrated.

Hydroquinone is the best skin topical ingredient for skin discolorations, hyperpigmentation, but it should never be over 10% and you really need to treat it as a time treatment, because it gets into your liver and can cause damage if you use it longterm.

I dont see how it will f.u.c.k your face up when it has good results if you use it in the short term, but i get what you mean

and hydroquione it contains mercury, I would never use that especially for darker skin, it can cause cancer and have all sorts of terrible side effects

You may think it has good results used short term, only because it feels smoother from rubbing the dead cells off very abrasively. If you were to get your skin analyzed under a mag lamp surely hundreds of scratches and very small holes in your skin would show up. Throw it out. It also can cause damage to your capillaries if used long enough.

Hydroquinone is the only FDA-approved agent right now for treating hyperpigmentation. Anything can have terrible side affects, so using it as recommended is key and very important. It is not a bleaching agent, but a melanin suppressant. Like I mentioned, it's a time treatment. You would only use it as long as recommended by a derm or aesthetician and always wear sunscreen on top.

Other alternatives are brighteners like kojic acid, licorice root, mulberry, bearberry and azaleic acid. These are affective to treating overproduction of melanin (your skin's defense mechanism to protect it from sun) but work best when combined with AHA's and BHA's.

i have used vitamin E cream for as long as i can remember (4+ years) and it didn't help fade my acne scars. maybe it would have been worse/darker had i not used it, but still, i'm not very satisfied.
i'm thinking of giving bio-oil a try... would anyone recommend it? what do you think of the ingredients?

i would recommend Cocoa butter for almost anyone. If you use the natural cocoa butter bar it will work very, very well on your skin..even though it may take some time. You must remember beauty always comes with a price and sometimes, yes, it takes longer than you may want it to. Anywho, if you use Cocoa butter your skin will reap more benefits rather than removal of facial blemishes; it will also be smoother, your skin tone will be richer and the texture will be creamier. Cocoa butter usually takes about 3 weeks to a month to really start working well, but when you finally see results, it will definitely be worth it. I would recommend wearing Cocoa butter daily 3-8 hours (or whenever you have free time). ;)
