U2

I think it truly says a lot about the state of our world today when the U2 thread is a mere 2 pages and Ashlee Simpson's exceeds 40

lol wow..great observation. I can't understand how that happens..maybe it's because U2 doesn't flub on lipsynchs like Ashley..

Did anyone other than me actually like Pop? Granted its' not their best, but I admit i actually liked quite a few songs..

Gosh, I feel like I'm the only poster on this forum. Looks a little pathetic. Anyway...

Pop was really scolded by the critics. It just wasn't really mainstream enough... I think that was the big problem. But actually, if you speak to a lot of U2 fans, they'll say they quite liked Pop. In fact, "If You Wear that Velvet Dress" remains to be one of my favorite U2 songs. Kind of like "Exit", or "Your Blue Room" in that it wasn't quintessential U2. Other songs on the album that I felt stood out were "Last Night on Earth" and "Gone"..

Their music is worse now then it was back then...their music has become very plastic...I can't describe it....only word to describe their music now is "plastic".....PlAsTic.... Their last three albums I bought and I only kept them for about a month and sold it back to an indie record store. They bought the CD's back from me used for $1.50 each......Hehehehe...I had money that day to buy lunch at McDonald's.....mmmmmm...:p

I saw the Zooropa tour in Berlin in 93. fabulous. I think I own everything they ever put out. (or darn close). and on several different mediums too.

They played "One" tonight at the Grammys. Glad everybody got a chance to hear that again, without being at one of their concerts... even though now it's partially Mary J. Blige's... :innocent: She was good, though.

I love old U2, but I'm not a big fan of their new stuff. Joshua Tree for example was full of deep lyrics and well thought out songs, not it seems they've played too much into the pop factor.

^ I think they've just acquired a new, playful energy in their music. I mean, unfortunately, too, anymore you almost have to adjust your sound to somehow fit into this pop world we're living in. Since '98, pop, rap, and hip-hop have been THE thing. Even Greenday has changed their punk sound a bit... but I think it also revolves around evolving as a band. Greenday, in order to change their sound and not be beaten down by critics, had to stray a bit from their punk roots and have a bit more radio-ish appeal... Of course, there are acts and bands who do their own thing, and that's cool and all right. But professionally you have to move with the times, as well, in order to be (commercially) successful.

I like them. They are very different from many other bands, plus they really rock :D

Oh my God you're a lucky one. Especially since it was in Berlin. I've downloaded one of their shows from the Zoo Tv tour in Sweden and everytime I listen to the cd it sends shivers down my spine. I wish I was there when they released 'Acthung, Baby' (my fave album) so I would have followed them across Europe and the USA. Those were their best concerts IMO. They were at their creative/artistic peak.

^ Agreed.

And I can't get enough of my ZooTV: Live from Sidney tape... (yes, still VHS tape)... I can just sit and watch it over and over again.

:buzz: Can you believe I taped it directly from a "live" transmission (it had a 12 hour delay)? :woot: It's been years since I last watched it, because my two VCRs are broken. :(

I just love U2!!!
I've been at their concert in Torino 2001 and in Rome last year... simply fantastic!!! I think they are great in live concert, I can't explain how I felt after the last in Rome...
Here a pic I took of them on the stage during the concert, sorry it's not so good because my camera is quite old.

I'm slow, I've only started listening to U2 2 years ago. Anyways, the odd thing is... I only listen to their old stuff because its more moving, haha.

That was my very first (rock) concert: U2 + Public Enemy + Big Audio Dynamite II. :p

For anybody who's interested... they're releasing Live from Sydney on DVD some time next month. :woot:
