UK Elle December 2019 : Katie Holmes by Daniel Clavero

What's up with the UK Magazines release January-worthy covers?

Only Bazaar felt festive, and that already says A LOT.

Part of me thinks magazines are going for these restrained December covers because they want to avoid criticism by maintaining a façade of looking respectful about the environment and the excesses of Christmas… even though every fashion magazine is just a sales catalogue full of stuff that nobody ever needs, so I imagine once you move beyond these front covers, every page will be a riot of ‘essential purchases’ for the festive period.

January was always the most virtuous month of the year, with all those promises to be lighter, cleaner, better. Fits right in with the current agenda.

The fierce pose is something new for Katie and I like it. Her profile looks great as well, but I'm not sure whether that's all hers or Ps.

But....behind the gloss, the fashion star who fell apart, the supermodel factory, the big business of perfect genes, the party edit....come on Farrah! You're a journo and this is a UK cover, get it together.

But did you answer the question Benn? Moisturiser or Mortgage?

But did you answer the question Benn? Moisturiser or Mortgage?

Actually rolled my eyes when I read that line because it's such a rhetorical question. LOL. Of course it's moisturizer because the British property dynamics have made it virtually impossible for us to get our foot into the housing market.

Ah, but if you were to become a self-made beauty mogul, you could sell enough moisturiser to be able to pay off the mortgages of several impoverished people for the sake of a good PR story.

I bought this today in the usual multi-pack with Red and UK Bazaar, but I believe the single newsstand version will come with a choice of a Benefit mini blusher or bronzer.

Looking at it, the cover isn't bad, but with the pink and white, it feels more like the fresh start of a new year than the riotous party season. 212 pgs.

Gatefold Dior ad inside the cover, then grannies for Gucci, 4 pgs of Chanel and Vuitton, some Prada, Miu Miu and Saint Laurent, then it's into the handbag, jewellery and perfume campaigns. There's 4 pgs of Valentino with Kendall.

The editor's note actually begins, "We had a different cover planned for you this month. Totally different, in fact. But then life does what it always does and threw a giant fork in the road, meaning we had to rethink the path we had all laid out." She then goes on to say that interviewing Katie Holmes was an "opportunity that presented itself".

There's an interview with designer Julien Dossena (Paco Rabanne), a look at gender-fluid dressing (sharing your wardrobe with your partner), a look at what's going on with influencer Garance Doré, the supermodel article is about model scouting in Africa, then the Katie Holmes cover story. The beauty section has a short flatlay gift guide, a guide to party make-up (ie red lips), plus an article about sleep. The 'moisturiser or mortgage' feature is a 1 pg piece right at the back of the issue. There are also two 1 pg interviews with boxer Ramla Ali, and Alice Temperley.

POWER DRESSING is a 6 pg studio shoot about animal-print clothing, shot by Arved Colvin-Smith, styled by Felicity Kay, modelled by Lulu@The Hive Management.

PRECIOUS METALS is a studio shot 8 pg jewellery editorial, shot by Anna Daki, styled by Molly Haylor, modelled by Molly Smith@IMG.

RISE AND SHINE is a 14 pg street editorial, featuring black clothes with sequin/metallic elements, shot by Hans Feurer, styled by Claudia Englmann, modelled by Elibeidi Dani Martinez@IMG.

THE LATE SHOW is a 14 pg indoor shoot, sitting around a hotel room, dressed up to go somewhere, shot by Tom Schirmacher, styled by Charles Varenne, modelled by Estella Boersma@Viva London.

Way to sell your cover star...

As a first impression, flicking through the issue, I was underwhelmed by the visuals. When I sat down to review it, I started to be intrigued by some of the features, but thinking back, there's not much of substance in this issue.

In general, I feel UK Elle's editorials could really benefit from hiring a well-known name every now and again. They don't have to hire the hot names of the moment, just get in some established models. If Red magazine can manage to hire people who can list Vogue Italia covers on their resume, then UK Elle can certainly negotiate a better deal from modelling agencies when it comes to getting talent on the pages.

Definitely the highlight of the issue, and I think it goes back to your point about getting an expert team on board because the fact that Varenne is involved makes a huge difference. Same applies to his US Elle edits.

It was well out of order for Farrah to say that about Katie. Can't imagine her team will be very impressed with this. What does she even have going right now?
Always amazed that editors never look for a local actress as a last-minute resort, who would gladly clear their schedules to make the shoot happen.

I'm a big fan of what Farrah Storr is doing with British Elle and I immediately liked this cover! I love how Katie's pose takes up the full width of the cover, the composition of everything and how it all flows to make a cohesive and inoffensive cover.

Yet for some bizarre reason, I've only been able to find this issue wrapped as part of those multi-pack deals with the likes of Elle Decoration, Red or Harper's Bazaar for £6 (which isn't exactly daylight robbery but I don't want another copy of Harper's Bazaar - or any of the other titles).

Why aren't they selling the issue singularly like every other month?

The single issues do come wrapped with the free Benefit product, but I can't imagine it being so popular it would sell out - plenty left on the shelf where I am.

In contrast, I saw none of those multi-packs in my area last month, so the Sienna issue passed me by. Perhaps they are trialling something in different regions, with this varying distribution of formats.
