UK Marie Claire August 2011 : Audrey Tautou by Max Cadelli

I cannot wait to get this magazine, and believe me, I'm not the only one who's a huge fan of Audrey Tatou, and that is not because of her fashion necessarily, it's just her natural charm ;)

In terms of general recognition - to someone standing in the middle of the supermarket making an impulse magazine purchase - Audrey is a charming French curio from a decade ago, in a film that was popular at the time, but not someone that the average person burns to know more about in 2011.

Coco Avant Chanel from 2009 is actually the second highest grossing French movie of all time at the UK box office (behind Amelie). So Brits still go see her movies, I'm sure there are those who are interested.

It has a free gift, so people will buy it.
But i bet it's another issue that sells below 100,000 copies.

Although that was considerably helped by the fame of Coco Chanel herself. If they'd relied on the residual star power of Audrey Tautou to achieve another Amelie, and lure people into seeing a foreign-language film about someone they'd never heard of, the returns might not have been much to write an article about.

But I'm not saying she isn't worth reading about, rather that it's the 'Jennifer Aniston Effect' - where for every one person on tfs who would prefer a sophisticated cover choice, there are fifty people out there who just want a magazine to spoon-feed them another dose of a bland celebrity they read about on a daily basis.

See the beautiful photos of our August cover star Audrey Tautou and find out what went on behind the scenes with the Marie Claire fashion team's Sophie Bew. Sophie says: 'The award winning French actress was a natural in front of the camera. We took a breath of fresh air from the tiny (but beautiful) hotel room we were shooting in to decamp the whole camera crew to the balcony. 'Squashed' doesn't even begin to cover it! But the resulting shots were well worth it, overlooking some glorious gardens in Kensington.'
'For the day of the shoot, we constructed our very own studio in the middle of the hotel bedroom (pretending not to notice the gaffa tape on the Victorian wallpaper),' says Sophie.

i care abour Vanessa 100 times less... it just me... I think Audrey is beautiful and charming... although I kind of like Vanessa too...

I think Marie Claire predominantly appeals to more intelligent people or in their 30’s and 40’s, who would definitely know who Audrey is. Moreover, any person who ever learnt French at school will know who she is because of Amelie and also for a small role in L'auberge Espagnole. Amelie is one of the most popular French films of all times. Yes, let’s not forget about Coco!
If you look at Harper’s their cover choice is quite sporadic as well. Maybe they fit in a bit better in terms of following current trends established by US Vogue which entails using actresses that have films coming out. But of course UK Bazaar is doing much better than US Vogue.
Elle is pretty much using same cover girls.
I think Marie Claire should start using some supermodels as well and it will make it slightly more relevant. Gisele, Natalia could make it more interesting for youngsters. Some 90’s supermodels would be great too because people still love them. I think the magazine was at its height when its covers were graced by different supermodels.

I'm going to point out that all of those shots of Audrey do NOT appear in the issue. The last one isn't in it, the red dress shot is severely cropped in and only shows her face and a tiny bit of the dress, and also the third shot doesn't appear in the magazine.

she's so beautiful, charming and talented:heart: , give me tautou over watson anytime
