United Colors of Benetton S/S 2011 by Josh Olins

I like the Benetton campaign a lot and in spite of and maybe even because of its repetitiveness. I can't tell that these models are not professionals, and I am not sure if they truly are non-professionals or perhaps mostly model wannabes who are not signed to a major agency. From my vantage point and taste, these folks are gorgeous and have camera presence and this looks far better than most other multi-model campaigns, most notably the multi-model campaigns by top photographer Mario Testino for top label D&G with "real" models.

I don't give a rat's patoot that "real" models were not used since the system under which "real" models are discovered and developed only has to do with talent and "it" factor within the narrow confines of what the agencies think that the likes of Miuccia Prada, Riccardo Tisci and Carine Roitfeld find appealing.

^ Nianga, Emma Hansen & Vanessa are actually signed to agencies (in London that I know of). I'm not sure about the other two but Vanessa has been modeling for a couple of seasons now (on the runway & editorials) so that's why I was kind of confused and unsure if the campaign featured "ordinary" people or not

no Emma Hansen has been modelling since 2008 so three years but vanessa has been modelling a year first season last year i think they are both in school or just finished

benetton always do this pretend to use real people and use models, and they chose 3 new faces so no one would figure it out

My take is that it is an open casting process and that "regular" people would be considered for the campaign. At the same time, it makes sense to me that models who have not broken into the big time would also apply hence leading to a final cast, some of whom have never modeled before and others who actually do have modeling experience.

thats not true on the rules and conditions it says only normal people no one work works at benetton, models professionally, acts professionally etc can aply. so they must have been picked...typical!!!

^ Perhaps that was the case in earlier campaigns but I don't think that's been the case recently. The announcement is pretty much along the lines of, "hey you, if you wanna be part of Benetton's next campaign upload your pictures by this date, the more you upload the better your chances." They refer to the models as "new faces" so I take that to mean that it may be a waste of time for Freja Beha and Sasha to submit their pictures.

I like it, as always.
Very cool and fresh but tbh to see something different would be quite nice, too.

benetton booked all 3 them via their agencies and they were told to pretend they entered

^ What is this claim based on? If it's correct I don't have a problem with you exposing that, although I am not sure if these days Benetton goes around stating that every single person in its campaign is an unprofessional who entered an online competition. At the end of the day I don't want to lose sight of the fact that the campaign is gorgeous and that the images are enticing and are as good if not better than multi-model campaigns that feature mostly the "usual suspects" of models of Eastern and Northern European descent.

beautiful images yes. But they should pay the models more than a free sack lunch. Btw Benetton down 16% right now. Maybe its time to rethink creative strategy.
