US Elle February 2014 : Women in TV by Carter Smith

Poor Amy, that's not the best shot, but I love her that her and Mindy are on a cover!

So I'm guessing Zooey gets the newsstand cover (possible Lena has one as well?)

Amy's photo isn't the greatest, but I'm really glad to see her getting on the cover of a major fashion magazine. The one I really want, though, is Mindy's. Love her show, love her, and the photo is gorgeous.

Why is Mindy's cover the only one in B&W?

It seems like Zoey got the actual cover

Elle does it again, makes the woman who isn't thin and white look completely different from everyone else. Im happy for Mindy and Amy, but its time to start being more creative

These... are terrible.

What a shame, would have loved to see Mindy be given better treatment.

I don't see why Mindy's cover being B&W (plenty of their subscribers covers are) and different from the other 3 is a bad thing. I think it's easily the best photo of the lot. For their November covers, Reese, Shailene, and Melissa all had mostly full-body covers while Penelope Cruz's was a close-up, like Mindy's. The previous year, SJP, and Kristen Wiig got colored covers where you can see most of their body, while Elle Fanning got a B&W photo of just her face and Uma Thurmon got a colored photo of just her face. I don't think there's a rhyme or reason to it, it's just whichever photos they like the best. If people claim Mindy is being marginalized, were Elle Fanning or Penelope Cruz also being marginalized?

I think Mindy looks beautiful, I'm so happy to see her finally get a cover! Love her and her show. Ditto for Amy.

Does Elle realize they can afford to make their subscriber covers with less text? I can't imagine anyone will throw out their copy because the cover doesn't mention "10 Instant Style Updates"

I'm particularly thrilled to see that Mindy and Amy both got covers, they are two of my favorite actresses working in television right now, both are just brilliant & funny. I really hope all of them are available at the newsstand, it's going to be tough picking which cover to buy since I adore these two. Mindy looks great but it does slightly irk me that her's isn't in color, I'm not saying they are whitewashing her (though to me it feels like they might be a bit), but damn why couldn't Elle have a beautiful Indian women on the cover without making her's so different then the others? Elle (and so many other magazines) do this time and time again and honestly it's getting on my nerves. By doing such things it takes away from the content of these editorials and interviews and instead makes it so that the focus is on the ways the magazines screw up portraying women.

Mindy got Adele-d by Elle.

It seems so. Lots of people are complaining about it on the twitter etc.

I have to say though that I prefer Mindy's cover. She looks really good.

The others are awful. Poor Amy with that pose. Zooey's dress is horrid. Alison looks like she needs a blanket and a hair brush.

Happy for Amy and Mindy even though the shots are quite unflattering and VERY boring. Not interested by Allison or Zooey...

You're probably right, and I appreciate you pointing all this out (truly :flower:). But, the fact of the matter is, average consumer isn't going to be familiar with Elle's magazine cover history so by making the sole woman of color's image black&white and putting the rest in color they are sending a terrible message -- intentional, or not. There's no excuse for an entire magazine team to be so oblivious.

Mindy's shot is by far the best of the bunch, I fail to believe it wouldn't have looked equally great in color.

I don't get it. Does she not look ethnic in black and white? Because I can still tell it's a person of color on the cover. Furthermore, Elle has always been the most racially diverse of the major fashion glossies. Going way back. Let's not forget the Williams sisters cover in 1999 or Alek Weks stunning cover.

Allison!
Love her, and it's about time magazines do something interesting with her, she's gorgeous.

Can't really bother with the rest, Mindy's cover is awkward as hell, Carter got too literal with Amy, and Rachel Dratch's almost looking ~fairy~, ah.

I only like Mindy's one, not cause it's a great cover, but only because it's Mindy Kaling on the cover of ELLE! She deserves many more covers, better than this one
