Cam Newton on Those Versace Pants, Race in America, and Whether He Would Let His Kid Play Football

He isn’t going to stop being great at football—15-1 last season, near unanimous MVP, a scorched-earth run to the Super Bowl—and he isn’t going to stop reveling in his own greatness at football. He isn’t going to stop celebrating after touchdowns and wins, or walking off podiums in angry silence after his team loses. Cam, in other words, is still going to be Cam. And he won’t stop until he gets the ending right.

Cam Newton carries an iPad with him in a case displaying the logo of Super Bowl 50—the game his Panthers lost in excruciating fashion, after which he went home and cried and cried and cried, until 4 a.m. came and he didn’t have any more tears left. He keeps a to-do list tucked into the iPad case, like he’s about to go run errands with the other suburban wives having lunch at this restaurant in Buckhead, the Atlanta neighborhood 25 miles from where he grew up and where he now owns an off-season home, and in time he shows me what’s on it. A white piece of paper covered in neat, tiny handwriting, Cam reading aloud from it. “Gotta get a truck tag. Gotta go to the bank. Got to…oh, send an e-mail about the play diagrams. Gotta go get my watches wound. Gotta go to the dry cleaner.” Gotta get in some quality time with his infant son, Chosen. Gotta do this interview. more at GQ

what a dreadful photoshop job on the first cover, I had to google him just to be sure if he really looked like that. The second cover is better

Such small eyes for such a big face! Weird. And the Superman vest, gold ball and gaudy fur, really? Talk about cliché.

Mario Testino just sank to a new level, it's far too weak for a September cover feature.

I have no idea who he is but at least GQ did something styling wise, other that a variety of suits...

The 'we love balls issue' in september too? No thanks.

I don´t know him, but i can tell he is feeling this shoot. Even do the styling is not my favorite, i like the way he is carrying it!

You should see what Cam wears in press conferences. Not really too much different than this.

I'm assuming there's more than one cover?

I think it may be one cover. Usually they do multi covers on the October issue, which is a 'Style Book' issue.
Not sure they'll do that this year since they released the GQ Style mag with Jared Leto on the cover.

That facial hair is nasty, he looks awful, especially when compared to the gorgeous 2012 cover.

Pretty boring. there's a lot of ads though, i would post them but they have too many threads and i'm not allowed to post them all here.

Omg, Christian Slater looks SO awkward in that edit. One can see he's not used to posing. The unease is difficult to watch.

I've got the August issue of US InStyle and in the cover interview Priyanka Chopra expressed her disdain for the word 'Bollywood'. I'm no fan of hers, but I can sympathise with her. I can only imagine how annoying and backwards the title of her feature here will sound to her.

His right ear is freaking me out. This cover is horrible.

He looks pretty good in his edit though.

That Christian Slater edit looks really late 90s, and not in the good way...

GQ is really slipping
