Late-90s American Bazaar was such a masterful duet of light/dark, clean-cut/sinister, commercial/innovative in its presentation. It really was Fabien’s lab to experiment with his AD, of which he would later refine for Arena Homme+ and Interview. That squeaky-clean and crispy fresh covershot of Winona/Daniel— only to implement these fashion stories that were on the darker and moodier, even sinister aesthetic is what made the dynamic duo Liz and Fabien such unassuming fashion provocateurs and storytellers. There’s so much education in restrain/subtlety there. And in retrospect, sad that these were Liz’s final days before her untimely passing. I always wondered how American Bazaar would evolve had she still been there…
