US Vogue December 2009 : Cate Blanchett by Annie Leibovitz

Thanks for the scans fashiontopface, but I don't really like this editorial at all. Maybe because it is too Vogue Paris and I am sick and tired of that misguided, mis-edited magazine. Anyway, impossible not to notice Isabeli's beauty.

I get what you're saying & I do appreciate it... but the only culture we have now is celebrity culture & it's shoved down our throats 24/7. We're so deep in the sewer that I personally don't mind a fairy tale editorial to escape in for awhile.

I'm with you. I don't know about anyone else but my life could use a little escapism right about now. Bring on the fairy tales.

You know usually I despise how US Vogue constrains photographers so much, and tries to make their work "suitable for everyone." Sims, Meisel, etc all produce better work in other magazines - but with Terry Richardson it actually works. IMO he needs to be restrained a bit, it challenges him and forces him to apply his aesthetic to something a little different than his usual sleazy themes. The editorials he's produced for the magazine have actually been high points for US Vogue, and I look forward to seeing more. Until Anna makes him do the same thing over and over til I literally can't look at it that is...

Yes, even a restrained Terry Richardson adds a sense of vigour to the magazine.

I do think US Vogue needs a provocative photographer working for them, it's been missing that for some time, since Newton passed away... Nothing vulgar, no nudity, but images with a hint of transgression, a sliver of envy and spite, a flash of sharp energy.

^Steven Klein sometimes produces a shot with some nudity, but his style is too 'mechanic' to make it truly provocative in Newton way.

I don't mind escapism in the least. And I understand we can't have satanism&s&m for Christmas ala Vogue Paris/Italia. Isn't there something terribly tired about depicting the most common fairy tales each year? There are more obscure stories, sagas and pleasures than fairy tales that Disney has milked every penny out of already. You would think this major publication would use this moment to inspire people with more original feel good sagas.

It does not have to be this obvious. They can just revisit the Diana Vreeland archive for some ideas to build on, some sort of inspiration. I'm genuinely tired of the Leibovitz editorials of this sort. It looks like a stage. There is nothing happening. No excitement. No unpredictability. It does not have to be vulgar. It does not have to be Vogue Paris. It still could have a subtle edge. But it has none.

At this stage, any 6th grader in the Bible belt could look in American Vogue and not only would the parents not be offended, but the child would understand every single reference contained in the imagery. That's the level of sophistication we're at here.

"Carried Away" looks good even if it's only a one-shot editorial. Love it when Karlie strike a pose like that. When I was looking at it, it immediately reminded me of her pose in the October issue of Vogue Italia. ^_^ :) Who's the guy by the way in their editorial? :)

"Blow Up" is hot! Isabeli is working it! And yes, I agree, it's very Vogue Paris. ^_^

As usual, Isabeli looks STUNNING. I just love the shot of her eating a sandwich! Flex those cheekbones girl ! All in all, I like the edit, even though her poses are very stiff and the photography seems too composed. Terry's work for U.S. Vogue has a hyper-perfectionism to it that his other work does not have, which, in my opinion, causes it to lose the signature sexual sarcasm and rawness that makes his pictures so lovable. His work for, say, VP is so much more cerebral, and so much more TERRY! I feel like we're getting the cheapened, condensed version in U.S. Vogue.

I love what I see so far. The issue seems characteristically polished as U.S. Vogue should be

I like the "Hansel & Gretel" editorial although it's been the same. The concept still interests me, Isabeli is stunning and "Carried Away" is pretty too.
Yes, Karlie has been in every issue of US Vogue but it amazes me how much US Vogue supports their homegrown girl. Coco appears regularly but I never get sick of her too.
I think what's important is that the model can take good photos or that the editorial must be interesting.

Rock The Trend posted Daria's "Point Break".
Here's the link. I would say Daria is stunning but the editorial is pretty blah. Her usual stuff, I'm pretty bored with the sporty stuff already.

Now, I want to see Coco, Sasha and Chanel editorial!

For me, the opening shot is a stunner, and because of its impact, the rest seem half-hearted in comparison - the "tropicana pyjamas" is a joke. But I know it'll look much better in print, when I leaf through the images page by page, rather than seeing them all at once.

^ some pics are from the april ed, but it doesnt matter since they are almost identical... :D

thanks for posting them here!
