Valentino ‘Urban Riviera’ F/W 2023.24 by Steven Meisel

Really awkwardly composed. Maybe it was supposed to read as quirky and fun, but to me it looks sloppy. I suppose it's sort of effective in that it showcases so many different pieces? But the styling is very.... high-street.

Better than the spring campaign, but why not get actual mannequins if this is what you're going to do with the models? Or make it with realistic stop motion puppets?

What's going on? :meow:

It’s Meisel so it has that quality of execution but it’s really a pity to hire him for that.
Forgettable…

can Meisel just retire? Even Irving Penn or Avedon at the end of their career wouldn’t produce such lazy, uninspired works like this.
Maybe because at some point of their career, they viewed themselves (rightfully so) as bigger than fashion photographers.

Meisel is a fashion photographer, has been primarily a fashion photographer and doesn’t seems to want to be something else than a fashion photographer…
So that means, a lot of commercial work…

it’s terrible!
one can see Meisel’s professionalism by the way the camera captured the models, the light, the movement but everything else is bad.
the choice of the models and that horrible styling. it’s a mess.
looks like Zara during sales season.

but, all good, coz PPP is so woke

Reminds me a bit to the US Vogue portfolio he did in January '95. Don't remember the story's name. It's the one with Kristen McMenamy, Amber Valletta, Karen Mulder, Naomi Campbell, Michele Hicks and more. All the models there are having a chat and their faces are very expressive.

its very similar with old ads Meisel did for Valentino with Carol Ribeiro and KArolina Kurkova

I don't hate it but the casting is odd. it can be that PPP is trying to prove that he doesn't need supermodels (there was some kind of talk about it in the past) so that can explain the odd casting, but I don't think that the pictures are THAT bad overall (except for the first picture, that one is reaaally strange).
the video is actually cute

The pink shot is kinda cute. The rest is a mess. I don't get the fascination by that particular off white studio background... It doesn't elevate anything. Logo is also too big and cheap looking.

His recreating his past work as he did with Thr Group ed. Maybe is a Valentino's series paying some kind of tribute to Meisel's work. Wish the new models were that expressive as the originals though.
