Faye would be a brilliant cover girl for Vogue China as well
But for now, I'll just bask in the glory that is Maggie...B)
Maggie Cheung is a force of nature. She is an astoundingly talented actress who, like many Hong Kong actresses, learned her craft while in front of the camera. A former runner-up for Miss Hong Kong (beauty pagents were one of the main recruiting grounds for HK actresses), during the late 1980s was in as many as 12 movies per year.
In addition to the Cannes award for
Clean (made with former husband Oliver Assayas) she won the Silver Bear award for best actress in 1992 for
Yeun Ling-yuk, released as
Centre Stage. She has also four Golden Horse Awards for best actress from the Taiwan film festival plus a bunch from the Hong Kong Flim Awards.
She is astoinishingly talented and it is hard to pick one performance as her best. Both
Center Stage and
Comrades, Almost a Love Story will have you in tears.
In the Mood for Love is almost beyond compare and she was terrific in many of the all star New Year's comedies from the 1980s and 1990s, stealing the show from casts of Hong Kong film royalty.
I am quite taken with her
and own about 30 of her movies on DVD/VCD (and one on VHS).
Many thanks to all who have found or done scans from this issue of
Vogue. She was featured in
WestEast a few issues ago and almost all the images in that one.
