Vogue Italia September 2007 : Agyness Deyn by Steven Meisel

MMA said it exactly right. It seems impossible anymore to put in your political two cents without offending someone and I admire Vogue Italia for continually taking that step, even if it's an unpopular one.

I don't understand how everyone thinks this ed is glamorizing war. If anything, it's glamorizing sex. And I wouldn't expect a fashion editorial to take this subject seriously. Sure war isn't supposed to be fun and have fancy clothes, but this isn't the first time war has been seen as fun. Take the movie Jarhead. I don't know why I brought that up but still. I think this ed is just supposed to be about having fun with your life and showing that there's better stuff to do than to go to war, like having sex. Just my thoughts.:flower:

Umm....no. I completely disagree with this. I don't think its showing that theres better stuff to do than to go to war, like having sex!!!!! I think this is a ridiculous statement, no offence.

This editorial is trying to be controversial - theres no other theory or intellectual backing for this war concept.

It's there to ignite controversy and its serving its purpose. People are going to be talking about it on CNN no doubt and it will be all over the news, hence boosting sales.

It's all driven by money. They want more money, so they have to sell, and what sells better than War and/or Sex?!

It's sad that Meisel is resorting to this, and I hope in the future he will try and do something more liberated and artistic.

I highly, highly doubt this. The last September issue wasn't talked about on television as far as I know, and my parents and their friends surely weren't talking about it, and that editorial was about 862.48 times more controversial than this one is.

haha you really think CNN and the news will be talking about a Vogue Italia issue just because it depicts an inaccurate scene of war that some people find offensive?

^^ it was on a either the website of CNN, BBC or something like that (can't remember) because I did my photography assignment on it.

It was in the newspaper as well because it highly political.

Plus, anything war-related is ALWAYS on tv or in the news!!!

thanks scans, a little bit don't like the cover

SEX....That's all the army does when the sexes are mingled together. Gossip and have sex. All the guys fight over who gets to sleep with the few attainable girls (or married, they don't care). These girls become some kind of holy grail. I don't know, but something tells me that's what Meisel was trying to show. I don't know how he knows, but obviously someone talked.

mhm I think the provocation was succesfull...

Yes indeed & people have posted some very clear points here...but...we're reacting to Vogue Italia's depiction of the war & sex on a visual level & we're all probably seeing things that Meisel or the editor's didn't even intend...so whether you think Vogue Italia's depiction of the war & sex is accurate or inaccurate...is highly subjective. This is Vogue Italia's depiction of the war & sex on it's own level...it is the war & sex on the fashion level....and fashion isn't just about fashion...is it?

:flower:

^^ well said :flower:

But I still think that the war theme is a little off. It's not done in an intelligent manner - the editorial is glamorizing war - it is giving it sexual connotations which lead to the subject not being taken seriously.

Also, its demeaning to women - its the whole "buff army guy with over-sexualized naked woman".

sorry for quoting this, kuba01... what I will say is not against you... it's just your post is the first i saw...i just woke up...so forgive my post...

i don't think Meisel and his team try to glamourize War... the title says it all... and it's boring theme (eventhough it's well executed!)... this sentence is over since the 1970s... I think the main pb Meisel wanted to underline... and by reminding us this soo hippie expression he just want to show american ppl that they used to be more, a lot more, reactive to what was wrong with their government... he just want to show you that you used to take your rights... from the outside (here i talk from France) it's true that americans didn't move that much against the War in Irak, comparing to all the things you did in your own country, against your government, against the War in Vietnam...
and it's funny that he's taking Vogue Italia for support... it's like Vogue US couldn't print this and he's doing it from another country in Europe to show his message (and Vogue Italia is good support for political or ecological issues... just look what MMA said...)

I doubt talking about War is off... just look what's happening since friday...:innocent::ninja::blink:

Vogue Italia is not Times or Herald Tribune or Le Monde.... so they are not talking about War (and other important issues) in an "intelligent" way....
they just try to show you sthg with outfits and story... what is (really really) wrong in our society today...
and I think they could deal with so many other pb!!!!:innocent:

^There you go...

I don't really understand all the fuss. Everytime a designer shows a collection which is military inspired, is that wrong and a big no-no? Commenting on war via anything else but the news is nothing new either. During the second world war, Disney produced cartoons with Donald Duck portraying nazis and Japs. That's not quite appropriate, is it? Yet it won an Oscar. Wether this cover is or is not a comment on war or glamorizing it or whatever, I really, really don't see a problem. Perhaps because I am not very patriotic...

Im not impressed at all Raquel really just stands above all the rest. But why is Vogue Italia covering issues that are happening in America? That's all I want to know, you guys are applauding them for doing something different being original, but why about something that they are not involved with? That's what I find even more ridiculous then the title of the editorial. Just my two cents.
