I could gaze at “Trailblazers” all day, all night. By far the strongest set of imageries of the issue: Mature talents captured in their still potent and unrelenting energy. The shots of Debbie and Kim are so gorgeous, and showcases their still vibrantly raw and radiant presence nearly half a century later. And at his best, Ethan outclasses Meisel by leagues nowadays with just enough heart and soul of his subjects that unfortunately, Meisel seems to have forgotten. Then again, with that Bella shoot in comparison to this, it’s near impossible to capture any heart and souls since she always looks and feels like someone over-sedated from the dentist’s office.
(These women deserved as least a double-page spread each. …And what’s with casting Crystal Waters??? Besides never being anywhere near fashion, she’s a tad out of her league next to the other greater talents: Were Donna Summer, Chaka Khan, Jody Watley, Sheila E. not available to represent dance…???)
