The Secret History by Donna Tartt
The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O'Farrell
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
and I've also pre-ordered The Girl Who Played With Fire by Stieg Larsson which is the sequeal or second in a trilogy (?)... I believe Stieg Larsson has passed away... reviews seemed good...

buying books seems to be a compulsion with me

You won't be disappointed by the late Stieg Larsson's trilogy either. Once you start, you just won't be able to put them down!
