What encourages you to buy when inside a store?

The two most important things to me in a store are the SAs and music.

Nothing makes my day like wonderful service from nice SAs and nothing will drive me out of a store quickly than awful, loud music and nasty SAs.

Nice changing rooms are important too, with huge mirrors and a chair so that I can check out how I look when I sit down.

As for cleanliness of displays, it depends..if I am in a high-end store then there is no excuse for them not to, but for high street stores like Zara, Topshop, Mango..I am prepare to dig through stuff but not by too much.

Rarity. If I know this is something that I will most likely not be able to find again anywhere, I am strongly enticed to grab the chance of getting it. That's mostly for nice pieces.

Or if the price is reasonable, that always help.

Music is a big factor - if a store's playing something so incredibly loud and obnoxious, I can't stay in there for more than a few seconds. Of course, if it's good, I'm more likely to stay and look around longer to listen. :)

Dressing rooms are key. A lot of people have said having a mirror inside, and I agree. One of my favorite boutiques only has a mirror outside, and it drives me crazy. I hate going outside with everyone around and not knowing if I look idiotic.

working in retail, i've learned to ignore (for the most part) whatever awful music is playing. i'd be more surprised if something was playing that i actually enjoyed.

I think it being rare is a good one. Then again I am talking item here not so much environment. If I know that this item most likely will not be made into a fake and sold in corner markets around the world - I'll get it. Because hey, once a season right? I really steer clear from monograms and flashy logo (that's a sure sign I will find fake replicas) unless the item is to DIE for. The beat of my heart must also increase at the sight of it. Also I don't want to have the security guard stare me up and down until I leave and I'd prefer if the SA's didn't intimidate me in general.

That's all I ask.

for me the store lighting is important- i seem to gravitate towards bottega veneta and ysl- all very dark, sombre and slightly sexy. but i agree with the previous posts about the music- and of course good service

I think a better question would be what in the environment prevent you from buying something, because really I'm not going to buy anything because the layout is nice or the music pleasant. I've bought things at nice minimal stores, chaotic second-hand boutique, ... it all depends on the items I'm looking for.
Now I sometimes leave a store right away because of the environment. Things like overcrowded place, and shady S.A.s usually piss me off enough I just leave.

I like to browse on my own, I want to touch and feel the merchandise... But there should be a SA available when you need one.

As long as the place isn't too crowded and the SAs aren't too obtrusive, I might buy if I find something I like. Very loud music is a big stress factor though, I won't stay in the shop long enough to browse if it's too annoying.

I always look at HOW the clothes are displayed..For example, if they're displayed in a easy-access & esthetically-pleasing manner, with actual THOUGHT put into display like many high-end boutiques, then I'll be more likely to buy there..Louis Boston takes the cake here in my neck of the words.

But, if they're just crammed on the shelves/racks ("too much merchandise, not enough space"), then Ill probably pass, regardless of what the stores' pricepoint or merchandise is..One of the stores here, while it carries great brands (and questionable business practices), displays clothes like that, so I almost never go in there..It just looks, well, cheap. Plus it just reminds me of looking for clothes in my own closet..Yeah, Im all set..
