It's an old term for stylist, or maybe more accurate, editor for photoshoots. A sittings editor is more than 'just' a stylist, as he or she oversees the whole conceptual development and execution of a shoot, right down to the hair, make-up, location, casting, etc.
The term comes from when models would sit down while an artist would paint them. Such a session would be called a sitting and later on in the early days of Vogue etc. that term would be used for a photoshoot involving a model.
The term isn't used that often any more, because the word sitting became archaic and the term stylist became synonymous for what the job entailed and took over.
It's still used today for the stylist who doesn't do fashion editorials but style the "real people" portraits...
and even some beauty and lifestyle stories...
