What Makes A Person Beautiful?

i completly agree on simplicity, its a very imprtant ingredient in 'modern' beauty

btw has anyone seen 'lost in translation' by sofia coppola? her 'first lady' was a simple, clean, beautiful girl, great film
yes, Scarlett Johannson! :woot: i kept looking at her in that movie, and was thinking, that she's not super sexy or super groomed, but she's striking & vulnerable...and specially when they showed her next to that "American starlett", who looked so plastic & fake.
i mean, there all kinds of beauty. classical & unconventional, simple & exotic, mature & young...

Beauty is just very personal I think ,off course there might be some 'standard beauty features' that we all could appreciate (clear skin, straight nose, full lips...) ?

straight nose & full lips are so easily available
still they dont really make people more beautiful.
on the contrary..

one needs more than these,
i dont think beauty is a matter of 'perfect' features

I know, but I think for a majority of people it's one of the things they see as 'beauty'

Wasn't it Shakespeare who said, "There is no beauty which hath not some strangeness to its proportion?"

tealady- I like that quote! I think that the uniqueness of a face is what makes it beautiful. I think the personality is what makes a person beautiful. I like labeladdict's 'be nice or get out' motto.

but then again....beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder...
im turned on by simplicity and a good personality- no fakes for me please....
people who try extra hard to look more sophisticated and classy turn me off....esp. when it shows....
straight noses and full lips are considered beauty standards....but i know some people who think julia roberts and liv tyler are ugly becasue of their lips!!!!
i dont know about julia (eventhough i like her a lot!) but dont you dare say anything to my liv!!!
god i just love her!!

I really hate the racist beauty standards. Not only is there a lot of Caucasian preference, but many ppl think that mixed ppl are the prettiest -- that's unfair. Beauty has nothing to do with race. There are stunning ppl of one race and stunning ppl of ten races. It seriously bothers me when a magazine a magazine (I think it was Elle) prints an article on why mixed people are scientifically prettier than others. It also bothers me when interracial couples say that not only does marriage between the races lead to peace, but prettier babies. Then again, it bothers me when cosmetics companies teach Asians to apply eyeshadow to create the appearance of a crease. We have to get to the point as a society where we realize, black as the night, pale as a star, five races, biracial, Native American whatever -- beauty has nothing to do with race.
I think it might be a changing social perception on race. I am mixed, and about 10 years ago very few of my peers found me attractive. Now, they are saying how we are the GAP models of the future. The mixing of cultures is something new and unique, so it is understandable why people are so fascinated by it.

By the way, I also hate it when makeup artists try to get asian people to create fake creases with their eye makeup.

^ or try to erase the crease u have
going against mother nature is like the ugliest thing ever.

I believe that beauty is one of those things that cannot be easily defined. There are just far too many factors to be considered. The fact that this is likely only "true" Germans, judging by the lack of other races being used in the study, automatically seems to make the standard more narrow. So this could hardly be used as a cover-all.

Also, since people have flaws and different particular things that makes their own face unique, there are things that help and things that detract, which makes a universal definition of beauty impossible to gauge.

For example, there's "beauty moles" put one in the wrong place and see how that looks?

Plus, in the end, people have different tastes, so the old cliche, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" still has value.

And my take on the mixed=pretty thing, is that harder to obtain seems to be valued higher. So, in a universalized world, if you want some Asians, go to Asia if you want some Africans, go to Africa. Plus, in metropolitan areas, they're coming to these areas so the "rarity" diminishes. Plus, take into account that there are also dominant genes to account for, so a mixed person might not necessarily look mixed in the first place. Therefore, it takes a certain mix and you can't necessarily, just run to one particular place and find them...

Voila! You have yet another idea of beauty.

But these ideals are so fickle. Take a look at the past. Bigger was better, since the poor had no food. Lighter was better, since the darker skin meant that they were common workers in who were in the sun all day.

Nowadays, it's not necessarily stressed to be light or dark. Plus, being born a certain way loses its value with all these surgeries and products. Want to be darker even though you're stuck inside working most of your life? Tanning beds! Want straight hair? Relaxer! Want to be a blonde? Bleach!

The list goes on. But as it is much easier to put on weight than to lose it in America with all this fast food and ridiculous portion sizing, then thinner becomes ideal.

The harder, the better, the more beautiful. That's just how things seem to work. Who's clamoring to be the "commoner" after all?

Anywho, that's my two cents.

^ Stunning reply. Truly. Oh and I'm American - I have never been to a 'fast food' restaurant in my life. I wouldn't dream of doing it either. Those places smell really horrible. :(

To me, what makes a person beautiful comes from within. To feel comfortable & confident with themself & not afraid to show it in their appearance, dress & attitude to life & to others. That means so much (& shows so much) than how their physical features are arranged.

symmetrical face and good hair make a person look good,i think
