I am a designer and like to survey people from time to time to see what consumers really want. I have been to alot of shows lately and it seem that whats on the runway dosent reflect what people are really shopping for. Do desingers live in a bubble and think women go to parties all the time in wild dresses, when I look around most people I see are wearing T shirts and jeans, maybe a nice top, but rarely dresses (only at clubs or special events). Any feedback will be helpful.

I mostly spend my money on useless stuff I don't need. Primarily poufy vintage dresses, cheap earrings and silly t-shirts.
I like tops over bottoms and dresses over everything else
I only buy swimwear when I really have to
My mum buys me underwear, again, can't be bothered
I tend to buy a lot of bright colours, mostly yellow
I think I probably spend about $50/month, depending on my mood and whether I've been paid lately
I mostly shop at vintage stores, Zara, and this Chinease store I love

When I shop, I'm crazy about jeans and low-cut tops. I'm on this huge dancing/bar thing (I'm in college), so I NEED sexy clothes. Gotta have them!

I buy swimwear usually in the fall, when the swimsuits go on sale from the summer. I am a huge bargain hunter...but that way, I can get the pricey swimsuits at a great deal. I go for the basics, and try not to follow the trends, with swimwear, anyway.

I buy underwear every few months...

I'm a conservative girl, but at the same time love to add some reds in. The colors I own most of are reds, pinks, blacks, whites, and beiges.

I don't drop a huge amount on clothing a month, but it's hard telling exactly how much... I tend to shop at GAP, Banana, or even off Ebay.

I guess I should answer my own post fo anyone interested. I have odd shopping habbits and consider myself a minimalist.

Apx. what I bought last year:

4 pairs of jeans (levis)
10 tshirts (black white and red only, br, gucci, lang, sisley)
5 dress shirts (black white and red only, br, gucci, lang)
2 pair of shoes (black keneth cole)
1 Helmut Lang suit (gray)
1 Helmut Lang trench (white)
1 Gucci Blazer (black)

My goal is to be able to fit all of my clothes in 2 suitcases, so I tend to thow something out when I buy something new. I only buy 4 colors (black, white, red and blue) no prints or patterns and I only buy from 7 labels. (Gucci, Helmut Lang, BR, Sisley, Levis, Hugo, Kenneth Cole)

Tops, tops and more tops. And accessories. And shoes and bags. Quick fixes when I'm craving something new.

I hate buying pants because I can never find any I like, therefore I have 10 times more tops than pants/skirts etc.

Only when I'm on holiday in warm places. The selection of swimwear here sucks! But there is not much need for it here anyways .

Whenever I find anything I like. Which is not as often as I would like. I'm very picky about my underwear.

What colors do you typically buy?
Earthy colours; white, cream, olive, chocolate brown etc. And pink. And this time of year I always crave some bright colours after a long winter

How much do you spend a month on apparel?
More than I should

Where do you shop most often?
Being a student my money doesn't take me that far, so it's mostly H&M (etc) and vintage shops.

mostly, i buy tops and skirts. jeans is a rare buy for me, i never find ones that fit me nicely.

miss sixty (when my mum is generous and lets me go shopping with here therefore i go to miss sixty and killah babe, my favourite shops of all time..hehe), mango when i have enough cash, zara when i have a bit less cash..and finally, H&M when i do not have much cash, which is like..70% of the time, haha.

I usually go shopping when I need something. For example I need a black turtleneck because for some reason I can't find the one I thought I had.

I buy clothes every month or two. Usually at the start of every season.

I spend most of my money of bags. I usually go threw different phases. One time I was buying just bracelets, then it was earrings. Now I'm buying DVDs .

I love vintage stores and boutiques, but when I'm looking for something simple (like a black turtleneck) I usually go to department stores.

I have more tops than bottoms--probably 4:1 ratio. I have quite a few dresses, but I am kind of off wearing dresses these days. I count skirts in the bottoms ratio. I really do like wearing skirts.

How often do you buy swimwear?
The last swimming suit I bought was 8 years ago. Sheesh! It's still going strong. I heartily recommend Speedo to anyone who needs a real-life, you-can-swim-in-this, comfortable, durable swimming suit.

How often do you buy underwear?
My underpants aren't in a fit state to be discussed. I haven't bought any new undies in about three and a half years, so they are all kind of saggy, faded, and shot-out of elastic. They're truly awful, and I keep saying "next time I go to Target, I'll pick up a few packs of new panties," and then I forget when I am at the store. Bras I am almost as bad about, though I did buy some new ones last summer, though I don't like them much.

Brown, orange, red, yellow, maroon, black, some greens, depending.

How much do you spend a month on apparel?
Per month? Under the radar. $0-50. Once in a while I go on a fabric buying binge or pick up a shirt or two at the thrift shop, but even then, I rarely go over $50 at the fabric shop or $20 at the thrift shops.

Jo-Ann's Fabrics and Crafts, Cy Rudnik Fabrics (a REALLY cool, local, high-end fabric shop) D.A.V. thrift shop, Della Lamb Thrift shop, Junior League thrift shop, City Union thrift shop, Arizona Trading Company, Target.
