Will Success at Gucci Be Sexy or Safe? (NYT)

^ i'm trying to stop mentioning his name in all my gucci comments, i have too...(except one on this page..) because he's no longer at gucci....not many people are talking about lagerfeld's work for chloe anymore, so......

and i think he's topped grieving....
a-because he brought on himself
b-he said "no, they wil forget". he wasn't born yesterday, the man knows no one cares about him anymore.

It's interesting how some people here go on about how Tom is history and everyone should just move on and yet, didn't people do the exact same thing while he was at YSL. Every collection he did was met with complaints that it wasn't Yves enough.....

Isn't this pretty much the same thing, comparing a current designer to the originator?

i think it's very different with yves saint laurent. there is only one yves saint laurent and it's good when it's not messed with. if it makes sense....
saint laurent was such a prolific designer and to respect his vison seems right....i don't think gucci is that importnant

And that's fine, but I'm sure plenty of people feel very differently.

IMO, Gucci has been just as influential to fashion as YSL, just in different ways and different times.

I read that Frida is taking Gucci back to the OLD Italian days that she remembers. The Italian days of her grandmother, in the 40s. Which is why everything has been so feminine.

Tom Ford had this early 90s edginess with sex at the fore front.

Its two totally different atmospheres.

Frida's bags are great....she is clearly a wonderful accessories designer, but Im not sure she is so great with the garments/clothes.

I miss the resort, jet set sexiness of Ford's designs.

But ... ermmm ... she's only 32ish, she doesn't remember the 40s. She doesn't remember the 60s, and is doing well to remember the 70s :innocent:

i agree, michael kors is trying to do the same thing but at times it tends to appear tacky

I think she means that while Giannini may not actually remember that era she has a grandmother who does. She probably has cues in her life, I'm sure alot of Italians do, that reminsce those days. It's something Ford's Gucci never did. I do see a bit of that old style glamour in her work but it's not executed well enough for me to appreciate it. Besides, Moschino is doing an excellent job satisfying that niche.

ya know i think its too early to write Giannini off. when i first saw her spring collection i must say i hated it. but i was still missing ford. as i look back i realize that it was write for the moment. it was girly but it still had the some sex appeal (love the exposure of backs rather than front). then she did a 180 for fall. she did sexy. which was right in line with one of the themes for fall. she is doing like prada and moving easily with the times and i like that. nobody else tapped 70's this fall. but forget ready to wear, lets look at the accessories and the numbers speak for themselves. no she isnt tom ford, she doesn’t have the vision, but i think she is right for the moment. fashion is softer than it was during the ford era and i think he left at the perfect time because i don’t think his transition from uber sex to demure would have been so smooth or well receipted. so i am going to wait it out and see what next season brings...

yes, we have to give people time, but i think it's a travesty that gucci managed to make the usually edgy querelle look dowdy:

here's hoping that things will improve..

Here's my general thought: the new Gucci look will be somewhere in between blankness and the energy of Tom Ford. The advertising will be dramatically different--less sexual reference and general provocativeness. The designs will most likely be a combination of the minimalist aesthetic with a touch of Ford's signature sexiness. Overall, I think the Gucci image won't change signficantly, since Freda doesn't want to completely remake Gucci.

hmmm i cant wait to see the next collection for homme and femme. That should clue us in. Im not really sure if she is "spontaneous" but the last collection was better than the first. I loved it especially all the fur and accessories. BTW what ever happened to Alesandra F?

Exactly!!

She is re-living the period through her grandmother (photos etc.) plus having spent hours and hours in the Gucci archives, pulling pieces from this period.

Alessandra Facchinetti was only at Gucci for a few months after Ford's departure. She was soon replaced by Gianini. I'm not too sure what she's doing now, since Freda was originally in charge of the accessories line.

Yea i was wondering if anyone knew what she is doing now? I know that her dad is famous and stuff, but i was wondering if she is designing anywhere else? working or her own label, or something else.

I liked Alessandra's work. Someone should give her a job. Those tops and the coat Eugenia wore in the FW05 collection. Envy! And the last dress. Spectacular.

Why was she so badly received? In the Style.com video some lady's like "She's trying," as if effort counts but the outcome is hideous. I understand people getting tired of Ford's overt sexiness, but they seemed to have hated her skills.

Yea that was Franka Sozzani Italian Editor-in-chief who said that...

I dont hate what Ms. Gininni is doing but i dont think she is quite living up to Ford's legacy. He might have been..obscene with his designs and ad campaigns but that is what gucci has been for a decade..during his reign.I just think that that legacy should be continued, not changed. Dont u think?
