Ymre Stiekema

I like it, but dissapointed that she got only one shot.

I guess you're right Cologne_rocks about Doutzen.

I too am disappointed that she only got one picture. Would love to see her get more.

I'm actually subscribed to Dutch Glamour and I have to say that I like the subscriberscover way more than the other one! I'll make a snap tonight and there's an editorial with Ymre in it and a interview I'll translate tonight. ^_^

Thanks! I was, but i quitted. i looked in the supermarket, but wasn't quite convinced with the whole inside. Thanks, can you make scans to of her add?

I don't have a scanner so I can't scan her editorial. :( I made some crappy snaps with my webcam though since the batteries of my camera are in the charger, and I translated the interview. I'll post the interview first, my English is very bad so some things aren't right.

Beautiful, long legged, down to earth: That is a Dutch top model. You’ll be loved with open arms all around the world. Like Ymre Stiekema (19) from Groningen, who quickly landed a Prada campaign.

Once you’re a vmbo-pupil on the country land from Groningen, the next moment you’re the runner up of a modelling contest and you’re the face of Prada. It all happened to the then 15 year old Ymre Stiekema in 2007 when she was scouted by Elite, while she was shopping with her mom and sister. Four years later she has her havo-diploma and her own model apartment in New York. It’s time for a tête-à-tête with the blonde from Tolbert.

You’re at school one day, the next day you’re the face of Prada. How does that feel?

Those are two different worlds to me. When I’m home, then I feel home and not like Ymre-the-face-of-Prada. When I’m on set, I’m really working and that’s how it feels.

What did your class mates think about your success?
They couldn’t really appreciate that I joined a modelling contest and they all thought it was weird. I got mean comments, like: ‘You really think you’re pretty’. I didn’t thought that. I was not the prettiest girl in class. Especially not in the past. I had a fat face and white hair. Nobody expected, I think, that I’d do all of this.

How do you look back on the past four years?
A lot has happened. I first graduated from school and got my havo-diploma. Now I’m a full time model and I’m sporting a lot to stay in shape. It’s a really different childhood than other people have and I try to make the best of it.

Who is your biggest idol?

Doutzen Kroes. I think she is a natural beauty. And she is a girl from the north who stays down-to-earth. She is and stays my big idol.

Did you always wanted to be a model because you loved Doutzen?
No. I didn’t know about the job. It was such a coincidence I was in the city that day and I was asked to join that contest. I wouldn’t be a model otherwise.

What was it like to meet Anna Wintour?
Exciting. It was like in “The Devil Wears Prada”. You walk in and someone brings you to her, that idea. The first time I was really nervous but I came there later and she was different then. I was three years older when I came back again though, you’re more confident then. She is actually kinda nice.

Is it true singer Craig David made a fool of himself (?) in front of you?
Laughing: Euh, well, I don’t know. It was at the international Elite Model Look and yeah… What was it again? It could be true. He said something like: What if I stood in front of your door? And he asked me my number. My mom and boyfriend told him not to.

Ymre has been together with her boyfriend for 4,5 years. She lives with him when she is in the Netherlands or with her parents. The secret behind their long distance relationship? ‘He studies through the LOI, so he can travel whenever he wants to. He joins me when I’m going to New York and it keeps me holding on.’ Cause how much she loves travelling, she miss the Netherlands, her home, her family. ‘I wish it was all in Holland and that it was more easier.’

What do you think about modelling?

It depends. One time I like it a lot and the next time I don’t. There are things you have to do and you’re far from home, while I want to be in Holland, at home. But when you’re standing in front of Steven Meisel, you just think: Yeah, here I am.

When you’re a model you have to live between the lines. Is that hard sometimes?

I think it’s hard but I try and I luckily have people who support me. I sport a lot. It’s still hard though, I like sweets and that’s the one thing I can’t take.

Your ultimate diet-tip?
Lots of proteins, not too much of carbohydrates. I eat a lot of salads and vegetables and I don’t eat bread.
Also when you’re home in Tolbert?
When we eat stamppot (typical Dutch meal FYI, google translate calls it “stew”), I don’t take a lot of that. I like to cook for myself. I hate it when people have to think about me ‘cause there more people in home than me.

When you were a young girl in Groningen, were you busy with the latest fashion?

No, not at all. But I always wore what was in fashion, ‘cause I think about what other people think about me but it wasn’t that I’d read those fashion magazines and such.

How is that now?
Still the same actually. You can always imagine me in a pair of jeans, just give me my basics. Only if I go to clients I wear those trousers that make me look longer and heels. Really different than I wear outside of work.

Do you spend a lot of money on clothes?
When I go out shopping by myself I think it’s expensive and I buy nothing. Back in Groningen, there are no expensive stores and everything in New York is so expensive. But I work hard. Sometimes I have a day that I can buy something beautiful like a blazer by Stella McCartney for castings. But I still think it’s hard to spend money.

What would you like to do in your career?
I’d like to walk the Victoria’s Secret show. And to do the cover of VOGUE.

And after that?

Study. I don’t know what. I’ll come back to the Netherlands though. I really love where I come from and I don’t want to stay in New York forever. (Laughing) Even if it was just about my hair. I think it’s because of the water here in New York or the air, but my hair just doesn’t belong here.

i loveee the eyewear shoot! because we can see it in a lot of magazines and specially shop for the glasses!!! loveee!

Talk about stellar appearance, I couldn't be happier for her Prada shots this season
