The many chromosomal combinations that define gender beyond the bald male-female categorization are scarcely the stuff of fashion inspiration. Until now. The fluidity of gender was precisely the starting point for Stefano Pilati's provocative new men's collection for YSL. Bottom line: He used women's fabrics to make clothes for men. Everything—coats, jackets, pants—looked familiar, but felt extraordinarily soft, sinuous, unstructured. And, to sustain the illusion, Pilati chose to present his clothes in a video treatise rather than a show. In seven short films, the actor Jack Huston was called upon to embody various facets of the collection's concept. But with his blank, wide face, he wasn't perhaps the best ambassador for Pilati's subversive intent. The style of the films themselves, with their underground echoes of Warhol, Godard, and Kenneth Anger, was more successful.

And, fortunately for Pilati, the clothes were better than either. One piece spoke volumes: a biker jacket in washed silk gazar. Brando gone Balenciaga—a good reason why Pilati is such a fascinating designer. As well as gazar, there was organza in a blouson, voile in shirts, silk in suits, and the kind of gold beading last seen in Liza Minnelli's stagewear. But everything (okay, everything except for the beads) looked entirely masculine. Until you touched it, anyway. Aside from the technical feats of construction involved in working with such light fabrics, there was also a real insight in an idea such as a tailored jacket whose cuffs closed like a shirt. It embodied the formal/casual essence of the best modern dressing.

Looks like he did another film. Hopefully someone can post a link to the film

Terrible, terrible idea for a presentation. You get no idea of how these work on a body.

I mean, they could've at least gotten full body mannequins so that the pants didn't flatten out at the hem and the sleeves didn't sag. That's just not cool, it cheapens the clothes.

why there was not a runway show? they are closing the men's line?

Sth like one could see at a tailor don't you think - it's kind of a trick.

So he used fabrics that are in general for women clothes. Did he cut them all on bias? :P

no runway this year either... i don't like the collection at all... last winter was already not so good... miss hedi

Ugh the no models thing is boring and been done a million times...the clothes itself arn't bad  but would of been nice to see the clothes on models...

maybe they are just following the route of everyone else and just giving up and the male consumer. honestly, this stuff looks like the old ysl for men. it's nice and classic, but there isn't anything new here.

It seems like that to me too. Maybe as if a lot of the older more classic brands are beginning to feel archaic in the wake of more progressive menswear options and just giving up

the first 3 looks on the model looked promising until you got to the rest and it all fell flat fro that.

The video isn't the best thing to analyse the collection. The garments out of those blurry and mystical fogs seen in the video are substancially different. Despite the obvious tailoring there are little things that separate from the common. Desconstruction and female fabrics become clear in the daylight and i think this collection isn't about seeing/watching, but feeling and touching.

Great take on classical. Pilati does is again.

I keep going back to that iridescent blue jacket. It's totally Tom Jones looking with velvet pants....but worn with something more basic and less fussy it could have potential to be cool on the right guy.

If I had $2k to blow on a jacket that I'd probably wear once, I'd totally give it a try.
