I laughed so hard at those comments by Matenazzi!!!

I don't think he should retire either; he's still young. I think his fault is having announced his retirement before such a huge event. He should've kept quiet and until after the Cup to come to a decision. But now I think he may feel trapped in the sense that he wouldn't want to go back on his words and at the same time has a desire to play to prove to the world that he's still got it.

I love those pics, see I told you he was like the nicest family guy.
Don't understand why people say he has like mean thing which appears from time to time. I mean my family is the most sacred thing I have(jesus I am sounding like Don Corleone from the Godfather) but it's true and I don't know what' ll do if someone who's such an idiot even dares to mention their names. I understand Zizou, do not applaud what he did, but find it completely comprehensible.
Keep loving your family like that!!

He wanted to retire at the Real Madrid and the results aren't good enough, Real Madrid ended twice in the 2nd position in La Liga. That's good but not good enough for them, they have to win. Real Madrid fans are sick of Barça winning twice even though most know they deserve it, if Zidane stays I don't know what could happen, the team needs some new air and changes to finally make it.

I so agree with your comments there...! You're right, there probably is pressure on him now to make a better exit. He could still be match fit for the European championships and maybe even World Cup 2008. One can hope.

He must've grown bored of it all though...after you've won everything and acheived all your dreams, how much further can you go....

But I sincerely hope the football world hasn't seen the last of him

P.S All day on the news channels here they've been replaying past incidents where Matenazi has provoked players into hitting out at him and them him falling down in the exact same dramatic way as we saw on Sunday. It's safe to say Italy's world cup glory is being overshadowed by Zidane. Ha.

I probably shouldn't say anything, but... too funny!

Zidane's never been open about religious stuff tho.... all we know is that he's from a Muslim family.

He may still respect parts of the Islamic faith but doesn't adhere to the faith in its entirety.. People always assume if you're from a Muslim family you must be a really devout Islamist. It's the same way many Christians are Christians by birth but aren't necessarily that religious.

I'm going off on a tangent here now.....

Sponsors stick with Zidane despite head-butt

PARIS (Reuters) — The main sponsors of soccer icon Zinedine Zidane rallied around the retiring France football captain on Tuesday despite his dismissal for head-butting an opponent in the closing stages of Sunday's World Cup final.

Though Zidane has yet to explain his actions, sponsors from food group Danone (DA) to German sports goods giant Adidas rushed to support the man who fired France to victory in the 1998 World Cup.

Adidas, Zidane's longtime sponsor, even said it would launch a website — www.mercizidane.fr — on July 15 so supporters can thank him.

"He has been Adidas's ambassador for 10 years and will stay its ambassador until 2017. In fact Mr Hainer, the company's chief executive, said he could stay as long as he wishes," Adidas marketing head Emmanuelle Gaye told Reuters.

According to trade magazine France Football, Zidane earns an estimated 8.6 million euros ($11 million) per year from advertising contracts, more than his 6.4 million euro salary with Spanish soccer club Real Madrid.

In his last game for his country, the midfielder was sent off for butting Italian player Marco Materazzi in the chest after exchanging comments with the defender. Zidane missed the penalty shoot-out that won it for Italy, and the FIFA soccer federation is opening a disciplinary investigation into the matter.
But complaints from sponsors are few.

"There will be no impact on the contract we have with him," said Marie-Christine Lanne, the marketing head of insurer Generali France, which has a three-year contract with Zidane until 2008.

France Telecom said it had renewed its advertising contract with Zidane in May 2006 "for several years," but gave no details.

The son of an Algerian warehouseman, Zidane featured recently in the French telecom group's TV and press advertisement to promote its service offering live video footage of the World Cup.

Some observers say it is paradoxical that Zidane, often described as reserved and introverted, has become such a public relations and advertising icon.
The sponsors' attitude chimes with the reaction of ordinary French people, most of whom say they have forgiven the head-butt, according to a poll published in the French newspaper Le Parisien Tuesday.

In fact, the controversial end to Zidane's career could propel him into the ranks of celebrities who have turned dark moments into advertising gold, some observers say.

Earlier this month, fashion house Burberry reinstated British supermodel Kate Moss to front its new ad campaign. The Crown Prosecution Service had said Moss would not face charges after allegations in the media she took illegal drugs.

"It's not going to harm him. The sponsors are not withdrawing," said Jacques Seguela, chief communications officer at French advertising and communications group Havas. "This childish gesture gives a more human image of the hero. It brings the icon closer to the people."
