Virginia Valli

another heroine of silent movies Virginia Valli :)

Date of birth (location)
10 June 1898
Chicago, Illinois, USA
Date of death (details)
24 September 1968
Palm Springs, California, USA. (stroke)
Birth name Virginia McSweeney

Virginia got her start with a Milwaukee stock company and also did some film work with Essanay Studios in 1917 Chicago. Back in the theater, it would be 3 more years before she was brought out to Hollywood to act as leading lady to Bert Lytell. Virginia would continue to appear in films throughout the decade and she would be an established star at Universal by the mid 20's. The bulk of her films would be between 1924 and 1927.

While she had no trouble adjusting to sound in The Isle of Lost Ships (1929), which she made at First National, her big salary and declining appeal both conspired to end her film career. Unable to find a suitable studio, she would make her last film The Last Zeppelin (1930) at Tiffany Studios. In 1931, she married Charles Farrell and retired from the screen to live in Beverly Hills before moving to Palm Springs.

Buried in Welwood Murray Cemetery, Palm Springs, CA

Wow- that's a funny read!
It shows how much perceptions have changed...*tsk, tsk, tsk* Oh Connie, if you talked like that nowadays, it would be racist.

totally agree with you, orchide.i just wanted to add that i hope that the article didn´t offend anybody.i would feel ashamed if it were so  .i didn´t take her words too seriously (half of it isn´t true anyway) that´s why i found it rather entertaining ^_^ .

cheiby,nancy carroll is a cutie :flower: !!!

mae murray,"the girl with the bee-stung lips"
some considered her to be a model for the norma desmond character in "sunset boulevard" (mae commented on norma desmond:"none of us floozies was that crazy.").her movie carreer went downhill after her most famous film "the merry widow" (1925).there´s a short biography about her in a german movie-book,which contains a quote from her biography "Mae Murray: the Self Enchanted; Image of an Era".i´ll try to translate it,knowing that the english original certainly sounded different than my translation :innocent: :
"we were all like dragon-flies.we seemed to soar effortlessly, yet we had to beat our wings violently."

i´m sorry.it didn´t work.i´ll try it once more...
one picture shows her (if it shows) together with her sister helene, who was an actress too.

Fredi Washington

I respect her a lot because she was many times pressured to pass for white, but she refused to deny her Black heritage.
