What really bothers me are all the celebrities (Nicole Kidman, etc.) who wear "old style" clothes that resemble those of the 20s, 30s, so on....and then everyone calls them "so original....." not that the outfit is bad, it's just weird copying.....

More images of her, from gettyimages and corbis.com :flower:
Fashion is always going to be recycled, by the way.

the first 2 pictures are of camilla horn,a german actress, who played the part of "gretchen" in murnau´s "faust",and she also played in 2 john barrymore-films which i haven´t seen....unfortunately.
pic nr.3 is agnes petersen.as far as i know she´s a swedish actress.i don´t know anything about her,but i loved the picture :innocent:.
pic nr.4 is raquel meller,a spanish actress, who played carmen in a spanish silent film version.
pic nr.5 is catherine hessling,a french actress, who played "nana" in jean reboir´s film version from 1926.

i´m sorry,i just saw that i made a typing mistake .it´s of course not reboir but renoir .

hi Somnambule:)
haven't been by in a few days- I am excited though- I am going to a screening of a Pola Negri tonight in a bit. Its called "A Woman of the World" and it was restored more recently at UCLA. I don't think I have seen her on the big screen before so this is a real treat. I wish you could click your heels and join us!

I cannot believe I have never been back to this thread in soooo long
Somnambule, are you still around?? :innocent:
I had quite a week- got to meet a few silent film stars and I want to put the pictures up for you if you are still around. So sorry I dropped the ball on this thread...I mean to keep it up now!
I attended Garbo's centennial birthday celebration last week- they screened "Love" her film with John Gilbert  so nice...
Here is a cute little vid clip from the Pola Negri film I mentioned above that I attended a screening of- this is a scene where Pola's cousin is telling her tattoos are okay by him :p

One of the ladies I met this past week was a dear friend of Mary Philbin the star of "Phantom of the Opera" and was in the film as well.
Here is a portrait of Mary Philbin...

wow..fashion never fades...and classic looks are always beatiful whatever the era.

It's been 80 over years and yet their style can be seen in clothes today!

I've never seen 1920s fashion before......elizabeth taylor was the furthest back that I ever saw!

I just had the honor of seeing a rare 20's film 'Dressed to Kill' with Mary Astor who plays a gangster moll.
Unfortunately this film is rare and not available on dvd or video and there are no stills online...I say this because her wardrobe was breath-taking   I was gasping in my seat...amazing gowns, lounge-wear, coats, hats, the works...I love it!
See this film if you can ever for the nifty clothes her clothes horse character wears :woot:
Here are some portraits of her around that time---lots of people think of her in the late 30's when she did 'The Maltese Falcon' but this film I saw was when she was in her flapper heyday 10 years earlier!

yes, a small cupid's bow mouth was considered most feminine and dainty ^_^

What about Josephine Baker? She's not actually an actress, but she certainly deserves mention. Some of her outfits were a little out there (part of her image) but her voice is charming. I love her version of "After I Say I'm Sorry."

Actually, Josephine was an actress. She did lots of French films. :flower:

Cool thread.

some more Clara Bow

(style.com - beauty icon)

Clara Bow

With her huge dark eyes, heart-shaped mouth, and tousled brunette bob, Clara Bow was the embodiment of the twenties jazz baby. The quintessential free spirit, she was as fizzy as a champagne cocktail, but never vulgar. Her life was a Hollywood movie: miserable, impoverished childhood, overnight stardom, national adulation. Not that it was all plain sailing once she got to Tinseltown. The studio worked her hard (she made 58 films in 11 years), and until she settled down with fellow actor Rex Bell, Bow repeatedly clashed with her bosses over her tempestuous personal life. No matter; Bow's fans couldn't get enough of her undeniable sex appeal, crystallized in the 1927 film It and in her enduring, much-pilfered nickname—"the It girl." —Janet Ozzard

orchide, thanks so much for reviving this thread :flower:!!!you returned with great pics and above all great news.you can´t imagine how muich i´m looking forward to seeing your pictures  .that´s the closest i´ll ever get to the silent film world or silent film stars.
i´ve never seen any of mary astor´s silent films.i only know her from films she made during the 30´s and early 40´s,the earliest being red dust (i think).i´ve never liked her that much but i was amazed when i saw photos of her from the 20´s.she was such a beautiful girl....totally different to the looks and the image she had in the 30´s and 40´s.
the same with garbo.i´ve only seen one of her silent films "flesh and the devil" and i couldn´t believe how different her image was back then.she had a strong sensual, erotic aura (jack gilbert might have helped ;) ) whereas in later years she seemed rather androgynous, ethereal, almost surreal.
btw, talking about clothes horses-have you read "the power of glamour" by annette tapert?it´s a wonderful book full of beautiful pictures of film stars from the 20´s and 30´s and their outfits.the actresses that are featured are :gloria swanson, norma shearer, kay francis, garbo, dietrich, carole lombard, constance bennett, joan crawford....
it´s a pity but i´m sure that i´ll never see the film that you´ve recommended-"dressed to kill".but it´s kind of funny that you mention it,because part of my fascination with silent films is watching the beautiful and glamourous 20´s-outfits.
i´ll follow the pola negri-link you gave me.i hope i´ll be able to watch it  .

norma shearer, who was already famous during the silent film era and became even more famous during the 30´s (not only due to her husband imo :innocent:). for a reason which i cannot tell she´s one of my favourites.

Cheiby and Lady Stardust, thanks y'all for joining in and posting such luvvvvly pics ^_^ :flower:
Somnambule, so glad you are back :woot:
I got some goodies I will scan somehow this week to share with you- a 1927 Photoplay mag with great articles, ads and pictures-
I adore Garbo in the 20's- she was dreamy
Did that film clip link work for you? If so, let me know because there is more where that came from ;)
Speaking of Pola Negri, here is a pic of Baby Peggy- the first child star in the 20's a decade before Shirley Temple- dressed up in a film imitating Pola---
babypeggyphoto1.jpg

and here is me looking a little shiny- it was very hot that day- with Baby Peggy last week :innocent: ;) she is a doll and oh the stories she told...I met her helping at Cinecon-I also met Patricia Neal and Carla Laemmle- niece of Carl- she was in "King of Jazz", "Phantom of the Opera" and 'Dracula" but was primarily a dancer in life- she is now 95 years young and is soooo amazing- I chat with her on the phone now- such an inspiration-
Cinecon is the classic film festival in Hollywood- maybe you should try to come next year Somnambule...its every labor day weekend- 5 days of films, q & a's, dealer rooms of collectibles, lectures...they are all pre-50's films and all rarely screened amazing films!
