I adore flappers, but I also love Gibson girls, the flames of their reactionism. There are some days I'll take cloche hats over bonnets, and others when the reversal is true (to relate this all to hats)...
I recommend the book "The Twenties in Vogue". Not only does it have lots of fantastic pictures, but the text is wonderful! A lot of it is excerpts from actual copies of Vogue in the 1920s - so you get to hear about the fabulous parties, travel, etc! There are some used ones on Amazon, and sometimes cheap copies pop up on eBay.
Love this lady - rocking the 'older flapper' look!
Great thread! The 20s are one of my favorite eras in fashion. The flappers are really fun to learn about from a historical/social perspective as well. Helped pave the way for later feminists.
kiki de montparnasse,
muse and inspiration for many artists above all man ray and a painter herself.
la garconne
bronia and tylia perlmutter-two of the most popular models in montparnasse.they left holland and came to amsterdam at a very early age..bronia was only 16
jacquelina barsotti
(anticipating punk)
man ray said he liked her modern look.
"she believed as did all women who chose montparnasse that they "helped create a new era with no hypocrisy...living an honest, natural, and unprejudiced life."
"cartoons of the roaring twenties-volume 2 1923-1925"
john held jr. being probably the most famous and acknowleged illustrator of the roaring twenties...
since i have beenin a scanning frenzy the last 2 days i still have a lot of material to post in the nearer future....
more cartoons by diverse cartoonists:
seeing that the captions are too small i´ll write them down:
"take, for instance, the outlines of the egyptian, the phairest for the pharaohs-what?"
"then the classical outlines of the greek as told in song, story, and priceless marbles"
"now the outlines during the reign of louis"
"-which all leads up to modern times or,what we might term, the synthetic gin period, thus proving that history is not at all interesting without lines."
some of man ray´s famous photos of kiki, which left their traces in the history of photography

and the famous "violon d´ingres"
and another wonderful woman from the 20s-the admirably brave and radical, highly artistic and extravagant nancy cunard, whose life should become a tragedy.something that happened to a lot of people who helped to make the 20s such a memorable and breathless decade...
