I'm sorry, but in this thread there's such a mixture of speculations, scientific facts, scientific facts interpreted by journalists (that's the worst of all), astrology and some other weird things, that it's imposible to take it seriously.

Have you come from the future to give us a warning? So chaotic and casual discussion about the end of the world might actually be the cause of it? Our unstructured thought processes are a sort of 'butterfly effect' that's causing disruptive waves of energy that will amplify into an unstablising force that cannot be stopped, sometime around Christmas a few years from now?

I was reading about this Fifth World theory on wiki... "It is told that everyone will have to choose between the two Time frames—one leading to the Fifth World with our Earth, and the other (which will be very alluring, deceiving many) which will remove us from our Earth, taking us to oblivion." That puts a lot of pressure on me; I can be bribed with candy. Well, that might be the deciding factor. Oblivion or the convenience store for bulk candy? What is the asking price in oblivion; is it free and limitless? Something must make it worth the journey, so I'll assume yes... and yes. There might be some trouble ahead...

How interesting ... I hadn't seen it put quite this way, but it makes sense to me My guess is that if people are to be lured, it will be with their own egos, not with candy ... only you can determine whether you are now safer than before

The way I see it is that truth is a multi-faceted thing ... and anyone who has a comprehensive explanation of everything, with no questions, doubts, or grey areas is not to be trusted. (That goes double if they print brochures with all the 'answers' and hand them out.) I like the approach of coming at the truth from all different angles, like a kaleidoscope. That way you can get the flavor of 'the whole thing' ... or something approximating it

tigerrouge, I find that 'theory' oddly appealing I would say, though, perhaps leave the Christmas shopping late

These last few posts could take us in yet another direction; that of multiple simultaneous dimensions, where all possible realities DO exist and one can transfer between them as the dimensions cross paths.

Think "Sliders" or "Quantum Leap".

This 5th world stuff reminds me of another book by Bryan Weiss, where people do the opposite of past life regressions and project themselves into a (presumably hypothetical) future. As I recall, though, some peoples' futures had some things in common. I believe there was some agreement about a 'no-go' zone in the Middle East, which for some reason was so damaged that no one ever went there.

I remember another one where the Earth was completely peaceful, the population was significantly reduced, and there was an overall high level of personal evolution. This is the one that reminds me of the 5th world you're mentioning ...

Anyone remember the millenium bug? The world was going to end then and nothing really happened, so I'm sceptical.

So what the mayan calendar ends. Maybe they just never thought civilisation could go on that long and liked the number?

Anyway, it doesn't really matter in the long scheme of things if electricity is wiped out. People have managed well for thousands of years without it and I think it's quite sad we've become so reliant on it.
To put this into reality I reguarly go to our friend's house in the dales, which you have to walk to from the road on the other side of the valley. It has no running water, it's all in buckets from a spring, no electricity apart from a petrol generator, you do your toast and kettle on the stove and it's exactly what you need, with nothing fussy or unneccessary, and they manage perfectly.

Ok, that's kind of extreme to many but it proves a point, you don't need electricity to survive, just to adapt to life without it.

Also, there's the idea of the 'Age of Aquarius' which people have been talking (and singing) about for a long time. Some people think we are already in it, while others say it is still to come:

^ I remember the 'millennium bug' well ... I worked on Y2K stuff from almost the beginning of my career.

My take was that nothing was going to happen, if there were really important problems they'd been fixed. I figured that 'the herd' would sense if disaster were about to strike, and I didn't sense that at all as it approached.

The only thing I did was to rearrange my 401(k) stuff so as to avoid being hit if the market slumped ... which it did, so that worked out exactly as I planned.

If I recall it was quite difficult to find any bottled water on the shelves around that time--that was the second biggest impact I noticed

yes, that's exactly what I was trying to say.

But now, seriously, I've just heard on the TV some journalists discussing about the air france accident, saying the most ridiculous things without any kind of remorse, I can't help but to think that the same applies to everything they say. Don't believe anything you read or hear, that's the spirit, unless it's on your astrophysics book with a proper demonstration.

I don't think the world will end in 2012; but it could be the beginning of a new cycle.
I was watching a tv show the other day, and they were saying that if we kept on using Earth's ressources the way we do now, we could have really big (and irreparable? ) problems around 2011. If that happens, we'll have nothing else to do but change the way we live now...
