The gowns get worse every year :(

I agree so much with you, I didn't even bother to keep awake to watch the red carpet
I truly don't understand how this can happen, for me the Oscars is THE PLACE where you'll see the most beautiful gowns, but except for a few... nothing :(

My Best Dressed

Rooney Mara is my #1, I just love that Givenchy dress!

Really glad Mark Rylance won, he's such an extraordinary actor, his Cromwell last year was simply superb.

I think some people looked lovely, Charlize and Margot were my favourites. At the other end what was Kate Winslet thinking!!!?

I'm glad for Spotlight, Brie, Alcia, the brilliant Mark Rylance, and the documentary film on honour killings in Pakistan - well deserved wins

(I guess I'm glad for Di Caprio as well, but I would have loved to see the memes if he'd lost )

The fashion, however, is terrible. Every year I think it can't get worse, and every year it does! By that logic next year everyone is going to turn up in quilts and bin liners.

Leo .. god i cried like a baby.. so touching. He´s such a god actor and deserved this Oscar the most. Not just for the Revenant ( i LOVED the movie) but for all the other great films he totally rocked. It was just his time. They couldn´t ignore him anymore. I´m really REALLY happy for him.

Am i the only one who loved Kate Winslets dress?? I think she looked lovely. Especially from the front. And Brie wow, the color really suits her.
My other faves: Julianne Moore, Jennifer Garner, Tina Fey
Rooney on the other hand looked like a curtainwall, sorry :Pink: I dont like these light colors on her. But hey that´s only my opinion

To be honest, even if i was not really impressed i think Rooney Mara, Emily Blunt, Tina Fey and Isla Fischer were the best dressed.

 This comment made my day!

There's always been something i never liked about Leonardo Di, he just comes off like he's super playboy and immature in his personal life - that's why he keeps so low profile.

Looking at the dresses in detail the "morning after" is lots of fun, even if I hate most of them  I feel like analyzing them a bit :D

It seems to me the looks this year (probably every year) fall into a few broad categories:

Beautiful - I don't feel anything was really beautiful, or even especially memorable this year. While we all complain about the Oscars each year, there usually are at least a few looks that are genuinely stunning. This year there aren't (in my opinion, at least). That's a shame

OK/Nice Enough - Some of the looks are just alright. This is definitely because no one wants to take risks at the Oscars and so play it safe.

Meh - MOST of the looks are boring. Not ugly, but not vaguely interesting either. Same reason - no one takes risks/has much taste/cares

Tragic Bridesmaid Looks - Far too many looks this year looked like a bridesmaid had thrown out her dress and it had subsequently been scavanged by a well-known designer. Awful fabric, shoddy details.

Tragic - Ugly dresses. They're not appalling but they're a pity.

Hideous - Some looks are just horrible and should never have been worn.

My picks for each category :P

OK/Nice Enough
Rooney Mara in Givenchy - This dress could literally be her uniform. It'd be beautiful but for the slit up the middle. That really ruins the look for me. It makes the lace look frayed and too much like a table cloth or curtains. The top half is beautiful (even with the cutout) but the skirt is bad.

Saoirse Ronan in Calvin Klein - it's an unexpected look for her. Earlier in this thread, Wolkfolk called it very Sharon Stone in Casino. Very apt comparison. The colour is good and it's flattering, even though I wish she had worn something more daring and more her

Mindy Kaling in Elizabeth Kennedy - she looks nice. The cut suits her and the look makes a statement while still being demure.

Cate Blanchett in Armani - She's wearing this dress better than almost anyone could. But it's still the colour of toothpaste and I don't like it much. It's somehow overworked and yet a bit ... dull. It's only because she's so regal that this looks ok.

Charlize Theron in Christian Dior - Nice colour on her. Sleek dresses suit her, even if I don't like the bodice. But she looks good

Daisy Ridley in Chanel - Cute. Her hair is a bit severe but she looks pretty.

Dorith Mous - I'm not sure who she is but she looks kind of fabulous.

Tragic Bridesmaid Looks - There were sooooo many of these this year

Brie Larson in Gucci - Like Alicia she looks radiant and pretty (nice hair) but this is too much like a budget bridesmaid's dress or a bad prom dress. The colour is striking but almost garish. I hate the ruffled details and the bodice is unflattering. The belt detail is nice but also a bit too bridal.

Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton - I really wanted to like whatever she wore but I can't, no matter how hard I try. The colour isn't very flattering, the beadwork details look a bit cheap, and the bubble-hem makes the dress look like a quilt. Her earrings are nice, but the dress isn't

Rachel McAdams - It's a nice colour on her but the fabric just looks so cheap (like a bad satiny bedsheet) and unfortunately wrinkled.

Jennifer Jason Leigh - Bless her for trying. She doesn't look bad but the dress is like a frou-frou wedding nightmare.

Meh - Looks that were just so so
Julianne Moore in Chanel Couture - It's alright. She looks pretty and pulls off the silhouette.

Margot Robbie - nice, but she does vaguely look like she just wandered out of Studio 54. The hair is a bit too dishevelled.

Naomi Watts in Armani - Beautiful colours. I feel she's worn similar dresses before to greater effect, but this is alright

Charlotte Rampling - This would be great if not for the weird details on the bust. Are those pockets?? It makes the dress look very odd

Olivia Munn - Nice colour, ok draping. It feels a bit dull but it suits her

Priyanka Chopra in Zuhair Murad - She looks fine but the dress is too generic, it's been worn to death on the red carpet. Imagine how amazing she would have looked if she'd worn something more interesting

Tragic
Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior - Bad. Lace, sheer fabric and ruffles. Why can't Dior give her decent dresses? They seem to manage alright with Charlize - or does she pick the worst ones??

Emily Blunt in Prada - This does nothing for her. It hangs off her. The bodice is to blame I think, somehow it reminds me of overalls

Kerry Washington - She's so beautiful, this dress feels like it's insulting her. Awful bodice, awkward side-slit, really bad dress.

Olivia Wilde in Valentino - Terrible. It looks like she's wearing braces/suspenders over a floaty skirt. This isn't hideous but it is tragic since the runway look had very beautiful detailing. It's a pity she didn't keep those (http://www.thefashionistastories.com/2016/02/olivia-wilde-in-valentino-couture-at.html), she would have looked amazing

Hideous
Kate Winslet in Ralph Lauren - I think this is the worst thing she's ever worn. I suspect it's the worst thing Ralph Lauren has ever designed.

Reese Witherspoon - why would they put her in something this bad? The fabric is atrocious. It's so bad they wouldn't stick a bridesmaid in it. It's like a really horrible version of the beautiful purple Nina Ricci dress she wore some years back.

well leo's won! :muscles:

but more importantly - he used the platform to talk about climate change.
GO LEO... that's more important than the gold statue.

He´s right, not arguing that but what bothers me is that he used his experience with The Revenant as a platform when actually what happened is a natural occurrence called Chinook Wind, that has nothing to do with climate change per se...

that's not correct though.... he knows precisely what he's talking about.

i lived in calgary alberta for 5 years. yes, chinooks happen. but they would never melt all the snow at that time of year!! never. there would always be way too much snow for a chinook - which only lasts a day or a few days - to melt it all.

my husband's parents still live in alberta and the weather has changed drastically.

it's only in the past few years that these kinds of changes have happened.

leo is extremely knowledgable about climate change. like i said, just look at his twitter feed. maybe he'd never experienced a chinook before, but i think he understands the way global warming works.

we can criticize him for many things, his modelizing for example, but this guy's passion for and knowledge about environmentalism should not me questioned imo.

p.s. one more thing about alberta - they are comparable, in some ways, to texans. their primary industry is oil and gas. of course many of them don't want to hear about the shift to fossil fuels!! they would rather deny climate change. so if some albertans tweeted about leo ... consider their political motives.
