A Retrospective: Gucci & Yves Saint Laurent under Tom Ford (1995-2004)

I have to say, while that season is probably one of Ford's weaker collections (weaker being relative, obviously, cause even his least compelling work was major), I can still remember how influential some of the clothes and styling tricks from this collection became. Those tone-on-tone iridescent suits and shirts, the visible thong straps and bra backs, the sober jersey separates cut to show off the midriff and back...that stuff basically was the late 90s. I mean sure, the thong and bra thing very quickly became trashtastic off of a runway and worn with anything other than sharply tailored shantung cigarette pants and tank tops, but still...

I must've clearly seen pictures of the men's clothes from this collection somewhere because I definitely drove my mother insane trying to find the inky blue iridescent dress shirt and slightly darker iridescent tie that I wore with a black suit to someone's bar or bat mitzvah later that year.

^Thanks a lot Spike! Such a rare find. Could it be an official Tom Ford channel? They've uploaded everything from Tom's Gucci and YSL tenures.

^ I hadn't noticed that! It sure seems like it, although oddly there's a Dior Homme video mixed in there, the YSL SS03 men's show is mislabeled as FW03 and the only Tom Ford label show is FW13.

Good call though!!!

OMG! What a find!

How fabulous seeing those early YSL shows! Love the debut collection so much. And I have to say, some of those men's collections I had never seen before, but they are just so perfect...so sumptuous, so sophisticated, so attractive, moody, elegant, aloof....I'm really loving the Fall/Winter 2002 show...with that gorgeous soundtrack of Roberta Flack and Lamb! Amazing!

Thanks for posted, Spike!

They changed the music though, if you can handle that.

There's an insta acoount called TomFordforGucci who keeps posting goodies...worth a look!

So weird that they did that. I remember this soundtrack was Nirvana and other like garage rock sounding stuff.

It's annoying but it's probably due to copyrights. Then again, they still have the videos with the original soundtrack on their channel.

Just stumbled upon a few videos of Tom's collection for YSL on Youtube and it made me so nostalgic... I know I might go against the current here, but I loved his YSL collections even more than his Gucci collections (although I did like those as well)... And the model lineup for these shows!!! Just insane... I don't like to be all "It was better in the past" but in this specific case, I find it hard not to feel that way... And now I just saw that TF is for sale, wonder if Tom will step out of the fashion industry for good and focus on movies?
