Allure September 2017 : Helen Mirren by Scott Trindle

Ironical how the phrase "Anti-aging" is the most attention grabbing headline. Why not actually abolish the phrase altogether by NOT using any part of it and running instead a clever, original "pro-age" slogan? Like an actual, thought-provoking tagline. Missed opportunity to demonstrate outside of the box thinking for allure.

The end result of the cover shoot is rather lackluster in terms of cohesiveness/styling/photography; while beautiful that chair shot looks out of place. However, Helen's personality, apparent light hand with airbrushing is a nice break from allure's re-invented, never ending barrage of millenial geared beauty marketing.

Allure is trying so hard to be different, I just wish the focus of the beauty styling wasn't "how to look like you're always at a music festival". Even Helen Mirren gets a tattooed arm around her, like she's wearing her glamorous best to hang out at a beer tent.

At least Allure will get an advertising boost from L'Oreal, using one of their spokesmodels like this in their issue. Any more older women inside, or is it all words on the cover, then lots more twentysomethings with feathers in their hair?

I do get a more 'Nylon meets Allure' vibe from the content, and I imagine this is why CN appointed Lee. They wanted that 'youth' energy captured for the magazine. I'm hoping that this cover will sell well for them so that older woman can be normalised without the 'age issue' or 'anit-ageing' tags.

Helen and Riley's edits are the best so far. Riley's especially is really impressive considering it's from Hans Feurer. And the last time I recall seeing Katie Moore is on Vogue Italia shot by Meisel, not much since. It seems her moment fizzled before it began.

This delayed targeting of the AA community is quite interesting because marketing proved that they contribute a sizeable portion to the hair and beauty industry (that's regardless of income bracket). I've read that in some African countries black women outspend all other groups on haircare products, especially.

Aside from Helen I was pretty bored until I saw Riley's editorial - so beautiful and very underrated. Love the second shot of Lorena in All Tied Up too.

Love the cover. Another photo used would have been amazing though.

I read this issue online - thanks to my local library - and I did enjoy it, but it's only around 134 pages long. Sure, Allure never varied in size too much between any of the months, but I must go back and see whether it was ever that small for September.

Although I see Helen Mirren isn't the only L'oreal spokesperson featured on the editorial pages, and it seems to have paid off, in terms of the accompanying adverts from that part of the company.
