American Idol

Faith, you basically said everything i was going to say!

i have nothing against David or his fans i just don't get all this hype and admiration surrounding him. yes, he looks adorable and talented for someone his age. for me, his voice is good, but not great. i'm involved in the performing arts industry (film and theatre) and i'm very sure i've heard more boys his age who sings better than him. i don't feel anything when i watch him. he looks like a contestant more than a star for me....that's why i find him mediocre.

me too :ninja: i didn't like his "Imagine" performance AT ALL.....

Oh man, thank goodness someone agrees! I always felt strange that I seemed like one of the few who wasn't impressed by David, but at least I know you share similar sentiments!

adorefaith - You're from Australia, right? The first people that popped in my mind when you asked for examples were actually Matt Corby and Ben McKenzie from Australian Idol's fifth season! Matt was 16/17 during that time, and Ben was 17. Though both had their share of pitch problems as well, they just demonstrated so much talent, versatility, and vocal ability...and most importantly, I felt that their performances were absolutely natural, not forced, as I mentioned about David. No matter how good your voice is, it's a matter of how you project it and convey the song's meaning, and I really don't find myself moved by David nearly as much as I feel about these two when they start to sing.

Matt singing "Across the Universe"

Matt singing "The Blower's Daughter"

Matt singing "Bittersweet Symphony"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCQkPJ1vhho

Matt singing "Music of the Night" (Holy cow!)

And here're some young singers that suit my personal taste best... I had to dig through my YouTube favorites (I really should organize them better)!

Rafael Moras (19) singing "Una Furtiva Lagrima"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qYdVOjZ0oM

Rafael again, singing "La Roca Fria del Calvario"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jf420NNIgk0

Joe Lenehan (17) singing "Zueignung" by Strauss
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhXuCnvkEVg

Giovanni Maschi (18) singing "Ol' Man River"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=el_evSt7S50

They're not American Idol material, surely, but it just shows that guys around this age can have so much more range and ability than what the show's limitations allow...and of course (Again), the young performers at my own school have demonstrated plenty of talent and star quality themselves...

at first i thought the Ben McKenzie is the The OC actor

hey faith...thanks for taking the time to do that...you sure do have a lot of examples there.!

yes...i'm from australia....i loved both matt and ben {matt particularly} and i agree they both had beautiful voices, great song choices and were quite original....matt was particularly spectacular in his development as an artist, i think...he had such a strong sense of his identity as a performer, it was quite incredible...so i do agree with you there. but then again, i think matt is as much of a rare talent as david a. - both incredibly mature for their age...

i dont find david particularly forced in his performances but i suppose i do agree with you that he isnt particularly natural and effortless either. i think that has more to do with nerves, though, and his stage presence will develop with time, as his confidence increases and he's had more experience. vocally, however, i dont find that he strains or forces his voice. did you mean his performance or his voice?

i think what it comes down to really, as you said, is personal preference...and your personal and emotional connection with an artist and the way they emote. i can't relate to the operatic choices you've posted, although i can say objectively that they are obviously talented, and so i get that same sense of 'feeling nothing' when i watch them as you do with david. i grew up in a very musical family and have sung from an early age, and i think music above all is about feeling and about connection...it doesnt matter how skilled someone is, you can appreciate it but you dont feel anything unless something about them and their performance connects with you. i guess that is that certain 'it' factor that people respond to...for me, david has that 'something'...that ability to feel and to emote in a way that really surprises me for a boy his age. matt corby had the same thing, absolutely. ben mckenzie was talented but i'm not sure that he had that same emotional connection....at least it didnt resonate with me. for me music isn't all about technicalities...breathing, projection, etc etc...of course all important factors....but unless there is that emotional connection, as you say, a great singer can just leave you feeling blank. i think that's where we're divided when it comes to david a.! :flower:

^i guess it really is to each to his own :flower:
i like this little conversation and comparison we are having ^_^

by the way, does anyone have the studio versions of Jason's Somewhere Over The Rainbow and Brooke's Happy together?! ...i don't know why itunes won't let me download songs like before

Haha, no problem! I think I'm surprised at myself because I simply can't feel that connection with David (While the masses seem to be able to do so), but ultimately my brain thinks/functions the way it wants to

I do mean both his performance and his voice -- it really seems like he's just saying words with a tune to them sometimes  And I'm not sure if I can accept stage nerves as an excuse, really...he has been performing a long time, and his Star Search performances from long ago were really great.

I know I'm hard on him, haha...but I do think he just needs some more time. My love for the rockers this season knows no bounds -- go David C. and Carly!

I do indeed have Jason's Somewhere Over the Rainbow. but not brookes happy together. the studio version is really just as amazing, except a little heavy on the backup singers at some points. doesn't mean i dont love it

IM SO EXCITED FOR TONIGHT! :buzz:

me too! ^_^

itunes let me download Jason's Somewhere Over The Rainbow (i agree about the backup singers but still a good version ;)) but not Brooke's Happy Together :cry:

I also agree about David A. His voice has never appealed to me. Occasionally I've heard him do some delicate interesting things but for the most part i'm just like go away. I don't like his ballads either and the whole 'aww shucks, geez guys i'm super shy' i'm like really? You're super shy? That's why you've been singing publicly since you were like 12? That's why you auditioned for American Idol? Really? I know you can be shy and still have a passion for a public profession but every week it's like 'they love me! they really love me!' and i'm just like go away.

exactly. he's becoming more and more annoying to me as the weeks progresses :ninja:

i just listened to brooke's studio version of jolene and i love it  she sounds even better in the studio {well i guess that isn't a surprise} because it picks up all the warmth and raspiness of her tone....i love it...she would make such a fantastic folk/country singer, and she already has the right image for it.! i know she's a songwriter too, so i think she has great potential post-idol....i cant wait to see the way it all works out for her...i can just imagine this really cool, modern but retro taylor swift/joni mitchell mix. she would be so fabulous

and ive figured out where syesha belongs...>>>>> BROADWAY!! she has a fabulous voice, great stage presence and she's an actress too, right?....i dont think she has the sense of self and the originality to be really successful in the mainstream recording industry....i dont think there is anything really 'new' about her or her sound, nothing that separates her from anyone else out there, but she is definitely talented....i think she'd be perfectly suited to broadway.! imagine her in a stage production of rent, for example.....i think she'd be great

^ Oh I'll have to go listen to that! (Jolene)
I love Brooke - I don't think tonight was her best, but she still did good!

As did Jason

My thoughts exactly! :woot:

tonight. was. awesome.
its almost midnight here though so i have to get to bed for class tomorrow. but i will definitely tell you guys my thoughts tomorrow!

just finished watching the show!

thoughts in white ------->>> ok, david a. was fabulous (again)...it was a good song choice for him and his voice is like velvet...so smooth and he emotes beautifully...i get chills every time he sings...he holds notes so beautifully.

carly....no doubt this girl can sing, but i think she has plateaued....the last few weeks have been mediocre, i think...she seems to have lost that 'it' factor...her voice is very strong, no one can deny that, but i dont think she's picking particularly good songs, and she seems very tense when she performs...i dont know, something about her just isnt exciting anymore...proving you need more than just the pipes.!

brooke...i adore her...she did SO much better than i was expecting because mariah has this huge old voice and her songs are so challenging...i thought she picked a great song and loved that she sat down with the piano and made it intimate...i thought her timing was a bit off and toward the end she seemed SO nervous...whoever said she seemed to lose confidence was right...but again, she is another contestant that is so emotive and genuine...she has a quality to her voice that cries as she sings....it is absolutely gorgeous, i just pray that america votes enough to keep her in the comp! i'm scared about this week actually...i feel like the bar was raised so high, i really really hope she stays in...

syesha....bizarre song choice...i admire her for tackling something so difficult and unique...she did well with it but again, there's no originality...i stick to my previous sentiments...BROADWAY is calling syesha!!!

david cook...i thought he was really pitchy actually, and the key was too low for him....but he builds a song up better than anyone else in the comp...he has such a good understanding of the light and shade of a performance, and he is so original....i was really surprised at his tears...anyway, he is so professional and i agree with randy that he's the whole package...he doesnt just sing, he gives a complete performance

jason...wow wow WOW....dare i say possibly the best ive ever heard him!!!! it was haunting...i loved the arrangement, i loved the instruments, i loved his interpretation...his tone is the most unique out of everyone there and he has such a great feel...he is really gaining confidence and i LOVED this performance...really beautiful

kristy lee....well, i have to say i was VERY impressed...i have never been a fan of hers but she did really well tonight...she picked a great song and she really put 110% into it...toward the end she sang flawlessly....her performances are always cheesy and reminiscent of a cruise ship but vocally she did really well, especially for a country girl tackling a mariah song!...i'm really worried about how well she did, actually, because i dont want my girl brooke to be voted off but if kristy lee keeps improving like this i just dont know.!

this was one of the BEST nights of the season imo...the standard was really, really up there....everyone pulled out their best
