Anja Rubik

Thank you for posting the great session for VIVA - it's superbeautiful! Amelia, you did a great job translating the interview. :flower:

^you're welcome, it's nothing, just pleasure ^_^

Part III

Were you good-tempered?
Anja: Too much I think. It was my mother who was the most crazy person in our house. I was a good girl in defiance of her. Maybe that's why I've never thought of giving up my school for career. School year started when I came back from Paris and the agency kept calling me with new offerts. I refused because I didn't want to bungle my school. Finally I decided to move to a British school in Paris. I thought I would reconcile studying with working. Parents agreeded, but when I went to Paris, it turned out that my language was not good as I thought. I used to be a very good student and I become an average one. I had to study instead of working. I worked only on weekends, just to pay for my flat and tuition. When I finished the school, I realised that there was nothing for me in Paris. Everybody knew me and I wanted to work with the best photographers and for the best agencies. I decided to move to New York.

You talk about it as going for an ocean is the most common thing.
Anja: At that time I felt it was the best thing I could do for myself.

So, you just packed up and rent a flat in Manhattan?
Anja: Luckily, I didn't come here alone. When my boyfriend heard that I was going to settle down in New York, he said he was going with me. It wasn't easy at the beginning. The truth is that I had to begin from the start, I had to enter into new surroundings, get to know the city. But I had Lukasz.

How long are you together?
Anja: 5 years. I think it's a long time.

Where did you meet him?
Anja: It's not a romantic history at all. One day during winter holidays, I came to my parents to Czestochowa. It was a time when all my friends were having exams and my parents were full of work. I was home alone. Then my father's friend from high school came to see us. My father told him that I was bored in Poland and he said that his son Lukasz didn't know what to do, too. Lukas was forced to call me and invite me for a coffee. I was forced to accept the invitation. We thought it would be a completely disaster, but we liked each other so much that after that we started meeting each other every single day. And we fell in love.

Thank you so much Amelia for translating!:flower:
Anja seems very nice. And I find romantic how she met with her boyfriend.:blush:

"Not romantic history at all?" I agree with Salacya -- it is quite a lovely tale  Anja is truly lucky (And most deserving of such a fate!) ^_^

^ Yes, i'm pretty sure she is as the interview is brand new...:flower:

Thank you so much for the translation Amelia!

You're all welcome  No doubt she's still with Lukasz

Finally the last part of the interview

What does Lukasz do in New York?
Anja: He passed his final exam yesterday. We're very happy. I had my little share in that because Lukasz is more into exact sciences, he was studying finances, but over the last term he had to write essays for literature classes. He was begging me to do it for him. I said I would write just the first essay. It was about one of my favourite poets, Emily Dickinson. Lukasz got the best mark! After that I had to write essays all term long because Lukasz was afriad that the teacher would find out that it wasn't his style of writing. Now we're waiting until Lukasz gets papers that will enable him to work. He's awfully talented and I'm sure he will find a job soon.

Isn't he jealous of your colorful life?
Anja: Maybe he was at the beginning, but now he's not. He's reliable and determined. He gives me a lot of support. There are days when I'm enough of everything - then Lukasz always says: "Brace yourself. That's the work you've dreamed of". And that's what I need in such moments.

Did you have those moments when you cared about doing some advertising and you weren't chosen?
Anja: Of course. Many times. Work of a model is interesting, but also very stressful. The worst thing is that almost nothing depends on us (/is up to us?) and that-generally- we exist because of other people. I've learned not to take what people were saying about me personally. The hardest part was when I was coming to a casting and I was told I was too pretty. I used to go mad because how is that possible to be too pretty?! When I heard it for the first time, I decided to start preparing to castings more carefully. Before going to a meeting with a photographer, I was reading everything about him. I started wearing T-shirts, trainers and shorts. One day when I was dressed like this, Lukasz looked at me terrified and asked: "Where are you going?". "To a casting. How do I look?". "As if you prefer girls"- he said. "It's all about that"- I said. That sounds like a joke, but it's not funny most of the time.

Do you miss Lukasz when you're doing fashion shows?
Anja: 2 weeks is a safe time. When I don't see him for a longer time, I start going crazy. Luckily, my sister Asia often comes to see me in Paris. She's got a 6-years old son and she teaches English at school in Czestochowa. She's got a lot of distance to the fashion world and I like that thing about her. She's my closest friend. I'd love her to live near me, but right now it's not possible.

Do you help your family by sending them money?
Anja: My parents would never agree. I can only give them presents. I've recently bought them a Mediterranean Sea cruise on their 25th wedding anniversary. And I took my sister to shopping in Paris. I was laughing a lot because famous fashion houses don't impress her at all. I was persuading her: choose what you want. She was just turning up her nose. We went to a Louis Vuitton boutique. I'm showing her a beautiful bag and she says: "Nice, but I don't like these logos". "People pay fortunes to have these logos!"- I was explaining, but I didn't convince her.

Do you spend a lot of money on clothes?
Anja: I like buying clothes, but my hand sometimes shakes. When I see something lovely, I call Lukasz and ask him: "Do you think I can buy it?" and then he's angry: "It's your money. You've earned them. Buy whatever you want"

Is Lukasz the man you want to spend your life with?
Anja: We're feeling good with each other. We're not planning a wedding right now. We got engaged this February (). We'll see what's going to happen. We don't know where we would like to live. New York is wonderful, but maybe it's worth to move to Los Angeles? Now we enjoy every free day. For instance, today we want to buy boards so that Lukasz could build a cupboard for our flat. Maybe I will cook a cake in the afternoon? I adore it, but Lukasz shouts that I make him eat because I care about my figure. So we'd better go to the cinema.

What a pleasure to read this interview. Her answers are so honest and thorough. Thanks so much Amelia!

What a wonderful interview! I'm not a huge fan, but I can't help but look at her in a different way now. She seems so grounded, and genuinely enjoys her work.

^ I'm so glad you say so  I always treat Anja as an icon, I've read & seen so many interviews with her. She will never be just a pretty face for me

this interview pretty much confirms why Anja is one of my favourite models...her answers are very honest indeed..she occurs to me as a very intelligent person ..as Amelia already stated..not just another pretty face ^_^

thanks a lot for translating all this Amelia  you did such a wonderful job

Her life doesn't seem really glamourous and I like it that way. first of all, modelling is a job and it's not always as glamourous as funny as pic we see backstage. She seems really down to earth and in love with her Lukasz.

I was at Wet Seal the other day and I saw a shirt with Anja on it with this picture.

GATB

I tried to find a picture of the shirt but I couldn't.
It was white, with black and pink, and maybe blue, I don't quite remember.
I had to hold back the urge to yell "It's Anja!" though. :D
