^^^14 years ago, standards were still demandingly high for photographers, stylists, models and creative directors.
So even if they shot a story that was conceptually “raw”, the technical aspect of it would still require a skilled and experienced eye for strong composition/color/lighting and storytelling. And that brand of sophistication required experience and effort; Terry Richardson would excel at this brand of spontaneity exceptionally well. And he was genuinely talented— no matter how most will cancel every aspect of him now for his alleged personal misconducts, sadly.
None of the new generation comes close to what Terry could effortlessly do. I've said it before, but none of these new photographers can produce a strong and sophisticated story from beginning to end; maybe one or two solid images out of an entire shoot if they’re extremely lucky. Standards are so so low these days— not just for fashion photographers and magazines, but for designers, stylists and models. The accessibility/equality/relatability virus is killing and stunting creative progression in every aspect of fashion. And people wonder why the fashion publication industry is dying. Just compare this issue to the recent Another Man. (Is there even one...???)
