Every decade has its retro fixation, but it's the Golden Age of Hollywood, in particular the 1940s and 1950s and the woman that ruled those decades, Ava Gardner, that has really captured our imaginations during recent years. At D Squared the inspiration was 1950s pin-ups, at Roland Mouret, hair and make-up was a modern take on Ava Gardner, with swept up hair, the highest of heels and full, pouty red lips.

Carrera Y Carrera, the world renowned Spanish jewellery house offers its ‘Big Secret’ - a selection of the most bewitching pieces from its 2007 collection comprising the Ava, Sol Y Sombra and Te Quiero collections designed in tribute of Ava Gardner, the legendary Hollywood actress.

Blending 18k gold with 10c diamonds, these painstakingly handmade jewels are the outcome of Spanish passion, daring imagination and flawless workmanship, presenting style conscious women a powerful and stunning array of jewels.

Nathalie Guedj, Carrera Y Carrera CEO, said: “This trio of collections - Sol y Sombra, Te Quiero and Ava draw inspiration from Hollywood film legend Ava Gardner, who is even today regarded as the quintessence of feminine beauty and of her love affair with Spain. They also capture the artistic mood that prevailed in Spain in the mid 1950s when she was its most famous visitor who lived in Madrid for several years. The ‘Big Secret’s’ jewels brilliantly capture the diva’s love for life and are sure to resonate with the aspirations of all proud, independent and individualistic women.”

A tantalising trio
Each of the Big Secret’s’ lines brilliantly reflect Gardner’s life and times in Spain. The Ava collection is a tribute to her sculpted beauty and ivory skin that conjures up the sparkling nights she spent in Madrid clad in gold lace, silk and diamonds. Its pieces are sensual, opulent, proud, yet delicate and full of life. It includes a show-stopping necklace in yellow and white gold with diamonds designed in crescent shape that suspends a circular pendant. While pave diamonds neatly line the white gold arch, delicate floral patterns adorn the yellow gold.

It’s fittingly matched by reversible hoop earrings, one in white gold and the other in yellow gold as also a bracelet in the same design. Ava’s one-off rings in white gold feature its well known sun motif studded with rose and brilliant cut diamonds as well as reversible sun motif pendants strung on double chains, in white gold.
Sol Y Sombre on the other hand captures the beauty of the afternoon sun in the bullfight ring as a symbol of passion and colour depicting it with its signature sun motif appearing on rings and pendants in yellow and white gold studded with diamonds that are perfect as casual accessories.
While the Te Quiero collection features the brand’s famous giraffe motif epitomising Gardner’s sweetness, dedication and love for life, as displayed in rings combining yellow gold and white gold, with smoked quartz and diamonds and in necklaces and bracelets blending yellow gold with diamonds. Exuding fun and sophistication, Te Quiero is a collection for the young and young at heart.

Extravagant and awe-inspiring. So what designer would conjure up such extraordinary words? Fragonard of the shoe and the Faberge of footwear. Roger Vivier.Roger reinvented the world of women's footwear in several important ways. When I say the world of women's footwear, I'm not merely referring to shoe-crazed women like us. I'm talking about cultural icons like Ava Gardner, Queen Elizabeth II and the Beatles. Seriously. These legends were the aficionados of Vivier's shoes. The origins of the stiletto name is just as notorious and dangerous as the legendary curves of Ava Gardner, who rumor had it, would wear only the shoes of Vivier for years.

Kenyaology

The movie Mogambo, starring Ava Gardner and Clark Gable, has helped spread misconceptions about how one should dress on a real Kenyan Safari. Ava's bracelets, long skirts, bare shoulders as displayed in the movie would hardly be sufficient while trekking through the jungle. Her clothes, while beautifully worn and designed in the movie, would not be appropriate in real life. Also, don't forget the issue of shoes. For girls, Ava Gardner's high heels are probably not the most comfortable choice for safari, so please pack boots!

CNN

For my New Year's Eve party this year, my only wish is to channel the iconic glamour of Ava Gardner. Think a lipstick-red strapless dress (something Ava Gardner would have worn in in "One Touch of Venus") finished with a pair of Brian Atwood heels that make your legs look like the floor is the only thing that's stopping them from going on forever, a crystal flute of Veuve Clicquot. I can't be sure, but I am certain Ava would approve!

Script, the portrait of Ava you posted, is that a hat on the top her head? I hope so. However, the artist certainly captured her elegance on canvas.
