The Eyes Have it…
“Ava Gardner had beautiful eyes and she knew exactly how to make the best of them with a perfect combination of eyeshadow, eyeliner, eyebrow pencil and mascara.

“To recreate this look, begin by setting your foundation and base. Try Hypersmooth foundation to create a flawless complexion. Then add a little highlighter, such as Shimmer Panstik, to the cheekbones and brow bones and blend well for a subtle radiance.

“For screen goddess eyes, it’s best to stick to more mysterious tones,” says Morag. “Try a darker eye shadow in the eye socket and lightly sweep Almond across the eyelids to open up and highlight the eyes. Next define your eyes by lining them with Colour Perfection Eyeliner in Black.”

Gardner had naturally arched eyebrows, even though latter day movie queens favour stronger brows. Morag recommends that you, “start by getting the brow shape as tidy as it can possibly be - and not plucked into a thin line, you need a fairly strong brow line. Fill brows in using whatever method works best for you – pencil or eyeshadow. I find Max Factor Eyebrow Pencil in Hazel or Earth Spirits in Angel Eyes work well for this look. Make brows as defined as you are comfortable with.”

Follow with a coat of new Max Factor Lash Lift mascara. By lifting the lashes away from the eyes and up towards the brow bone, Lash Lift instantly transforms the look of your eyes so that they appear larger and more vibrant - fantastic for achieving that bright eyed, siren look with minimum effort.”

Finish the look with kissable lips: try Lipfinity Reflections in Fiery, a flaming red shade which shimmers for a luscious finish, but is not overly ‘glitzy’.”

A classic scene in a classic movie, Ava Gardner enters the room, Humphrey Bogart close behind her. She takes her dressing gown off and walks up the pedestal to pose for a sculptor. She kicks off her shoes, as befits a Barefoot Contessa. And there it is: the most beautiful white dress ever shown on the silver screen, the very definition of a goddess gown.

New York Times
Contradictions kept surfacing all week. Here was Emanuel Ungaro, drawing upon those eternal soul sisters in glamour, Ava Gardner and Marilyn Monroe, but in a fresh way, with sensuous suits and superlight wool jersey dresses followed by a spree of Léger-inspired embroideries, that reflected the elegance of both Ava and Marilyn. You could see that he was trying to restrain himself, to avoid the old tangle of prints and damsel drapery.

National Post

Drab, uninspired and lifeless. And that was just Tilda Swinton's dress. Sunday night's Oscar telecast was a leaden affair, as a bland parade of technicians in their best suits collected their trophies and recited a shopping list of names of other bland technicians. What happened to glamour, to the days when Ava Gardner could walk into a room and jaws would drop at the sight of in something black and slinky, her marvelous green eyes smoldering? Where Ava and Grace Kelly seemed to float in their billowing couture, today's starlets look as scrubbed and pinched as kids going to graduation

Co Star Eve Arden on Ava-credit to Movie Maven

When she first stepped on the set, I thought she was certainly one of the most beautiful girls I'd ever seen. Those catlike green eyes looked me over, and then she smiled. Draped all in white, with her dark curls piled on her head, she shamed the statue from which she turned to flesh. . .
