OMG, Ava and Magnani! Two of my very favourite people together!
Thank you so much, scriptgirl!

"The World's Most Beautiful Animal"

The animal in question, Ava Gardner, was at her peak in 1954, a sui-generis sensualist more authentically sexy than any of her competitors -- most notably Marilyn Monroe. For Gardner -- with her ebony hair, cleft chin and slender, non-bulbous figure -- was not a conventionally manufactured Hollywood beauty. In those days, we guessed that all she did to be camera-ready was run her fingers through her hair and put on some lipstick.

Love is Nothing

She was who she was: Ava Gardner. Once upon a time she was thought to be the most beautiful woman in the world. She had luminescent white skin, eyes like Andean emeralds, eminent cheekbones, a wide, sensuous crescent mouth, a sleek, strong body that moved with a feline insolence, and a dancer's grace. To see her in the flesh was said to have made the blood race, the hair on the arms stand up.

People

A siren who was wildly insecure about her looks, a star who swore she couldn't act, Ava Gardner had always been a study in contradictions. To the moviegoers entranced by Ava during World War II, she was sensuality itself. But while part of her was the flamboyant temptress whose beauty cowed even Elizabeth Taylor. There was indeed a breathtaking lushness about Ava: luminous skin, languid eyes, and lips by Botticelli. Her hourglass figure made time seem to stop for most men.

Dr. Laszlo was not enamored of his storied clientele. He asked about their personal lives and refused to continue treating them if they stopped follow his advice. He famously told Ava Gardner (above right) that she was lying about following his instructions. "Your skin tells me," he told her. As the story goes, she refused to leave his office and they had a bit of a standoff before she finally agreed to go back to the routine.

Think Rita Hayworth, Marilyn Monroe, and Ava Gardner. Red lips continue to endure as a signature of glamour like a string of pearls or a pair of black slingbacks. Julie Hewett, a Los Angeles-based makeup artist, created an entire line of red lipsticks after working on the ‘40s-era film Pearl Harbor. Her vibrant colors would surely have been worn by Ava Gardner for a night on the town.

Steeped in history and style, the superb fragrance of hand distilled Acqua di Parma original cologne with its carefully selected aromatics is at the heart of a range that offers the pleasures of the very essence of Italy and is enjoyed by many international celebrities and icons of glamour past including Ava Gardner, Audrey Hepburn & Cary Grant. In fact, legend has it that Ava Gardner would wash her hair in Acqua!

^For some reason the dress makes me think of her as a mermaid. Her upper body was amazing.

I'm dying to see who Martin Scorese casts as Ava in his new Sinatra biopic...I'm rotting for Ashley Judd. They have a similar look, no?
